Title: Rough Take Offs
Post by: gsatterw on June 20, 2013, 07:52:30 PM
This may have been covered before, but I can't find any threads on it.

When I take off, my bike seems to have a rough time. When its in neutral, the bike will rev very nicely, but whenever I take off, I get some spitting and hesitation in acceleration. Happens both cold and warm. The effect is really present on take off, and less so while shifting through the gears. Seems to be a 5.5k and lower issue. The damn bike roars after that (while my gas mileage suffers). My jetting should be below in my signature.

Valves clearances are in good shape. Oil is good. Battery is good. I'm thinking maybe I need to clean out my jets or something?

Thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Graham

Are you positive that it's an engine issue?  I've had similar symptoms from a loose chain.

My 02 has taken off smoothly and run smoothly at any rpm for 98.6k miles but I've never messed with the carbs.   :dunno_black:  Do most of my running below 6k rpm now.  Thought it's 3 circuit carbs were a big improvement over the 2 circuit ones I had on the 97 GS.

I was just providing engine details to rule out the idea that it may be engine trouble.

Its highly possible the carbs are out of sync.

And I rejetted out of necessity. The guy before me (or who knows how many guys before me) put a v&h exhaust on and a k&n drop in filter and rejetted the to 22.5/60/127.5, so the low end was alright, mid-throttle was a bit lean and the higher throttle positions was outrageously lean.
