Title: Sealed Battery For GS500F
Post by: RodneyBR on June 22, 2013, 08:36:35 AM
The battery in the wife's 04 GS500F seems weak. I charged it and have taken the bike for a 4hr trip yesterday, but when starting the bike it seems that the battery is struggling. The headlight dims dramatically, and does keep cracking when cold starting. So it seems like a new batter is in order :(

After some research I've found this one(YT10L-A2 Scorpion 12v 170 CCA AGM Power Sport & Motorcycle Battery), but anyone else know of more sealed batteries: http://www.batterystuff.com/powersports-batteries/sYT10L-A2.html

Adidasguy should be around soon to recommend the Shorai LiFe batteries. :)

They are expensive, but I can vouch for leaving mine all winter w/o trickle charging and having it start just fine this spring.

Yep.. I dropped a Ballistic evo2 8 cell into my bike last year. Works great, don't have to worry about discharging in the cold or over time really

I have a MotoBatt AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) sealed battery in mine and love it. No issues what so ever

Yuasa is a good brand & for added headlight flexibility:

I have Motobatt and for 3 years it has been a good battery. It has no need for ventelation pipe. My battery has a battery tender for when it is not been redden. I recommend this.

Lithium ion? Absolutely not - those are dangerous with a motorcycle's charging system. If you mean lithium "iRon", then yes. That's what Shorai batteries are. And I can vouch for Shorai at least - extremely lightweight, much smaller physically, and plenty of power.

Since 2001 I have been dropping sealed  batteries ES12bs etc etc whatever it is the GSXR's has ... sideways in the GS. Problems - auxillary ground will be a bit tight ... Other mods needed. Route the ground cable to come through the floor of the battery box. Easy ...

Oddly, my current GS has the correct battery in it ...
Why ?
I had 2 left over from eons ago - from a store that closed em out ...  :icon_rolleyes:  that had never had acid in em ...
I still have the other old school one ... the next stock GS gonna have that one shoved in it.

Cool.

Put 1st Scorpion AGM in my 02 GS in Mar 09 and replaced it with 2nd Scorpion in Nov 11 so it went over 2 1/2 years and the 2nd has been in for a bit over 2 years now.  Being summer now I won't consider replacing it before late fall unless it goes bad before then.  About same as I've got with lead acid batteries over the years I think, well worth the price to not have to check/fill water and no vent tube.  They are same size as 10L-B2 and 10L-A2 oem size batteries.  Just drop in and forget.   :thumb:

Same AGM type as the Motobatt MB10U but less costly.  I find the AGM to have better cold weather starting power than the conventional lead acid batteries do riding year around here in NE OH.

Looks like a blue Scorpion and the blue color costs $20 more.

Ahhh, so the blue Scorpion is a gel battery? I never had a gel battery before, but I'm hearing great things about them.

Many friends from Brazil and I recommend Motobatt as best choice for price and for good l;ife on vibrating GS500 motorcycle. Make choice from friends say and not price or what advertisement say is proven as a good policy. I hope this is helpful to you?

Same here, my 2001 has the same battery as the previous owner put in around 2006. He was very meticulous, so when I got the bike, he gave me the Walmart receipt with it. 8 years later, still going perfectly strong. I've never trickle charged it over any of the cold Chicago winters. Even after sitting 2 months straight.

Looks funny shoved in sideways like that, but just keeps working and starts the bike up every time.

I have a feeling sideways alleviates the effects of gravity a bit ... I know its got a mat in the middle between plates ... but vibration and gravity will still move things ... and it will move down however slow ... it will never move up.

Anyway I have got many years out of sideways batteries too. I prefer those thinner front to back ones than walmart issue ones.

Another here running gsjack's suggested scorpion battery(black one). Great price, ships to you charged and ready to plug and play!

Working flawlessly, lots of cranking to get kinks in the moto project ironed out, used it for my timing light on a moped project, and still kicking strong!
