I just acquired a 2000 GS. I am going to do a cafe build. I am building a simple, single seat, removing tailpiece fairings and cutting down the back of the frame. Anyone have any experience or ideas for what to do with all of the wiring, fuzes, etc that were hidden under the fairings and now exposed? Actual experience with this will be much appreciated!

I cut all my stuff out as well. If you do some careful arranging, and make a plastic cover to go over the battery, all the wiring can be tucked and wrapped nicely over and behind the battery. You will have to work at it a bit, I unplugged everything and started re-routing, but eventually got it. If you leave everything exposed, you may want to make a small plastic cover that attaches tot the battery tray bolts because the wiring will all be visible from the side. I moved the regulator up and mounted it to the air box screw as well.

I can take some...but you will have to excuse the mess. I am right in the process of wiring up new signals, and plate LED's so the wiring is kind of pulled apart.

Not sure if I will ever get to it this year, but my eventual goal is to fabricate some kind of side covers that fit into the frame rails to cover everything, but I need to take my time with it, since I would want it a bit "angley" and such. I want to use the perforated aluminum, (a sheet with a ton of holes in it), paint the outside the same as the bike, but the inside, ghost it red so there is a little red seeping through the holes. Think it would look good.

If you ditch the airbox in favor of a K&N filter RU-2970 (don't quote that) and re-jet, you free up a LOT of space in there to move your wires to

I may still do this, and it would make a HUGE difference, but I am kind of opposed to the pods as a principle.
Wow you DID cram them in there! I will probably just join you buy creating that lovely rats nest of wires so the red wasps continue to have a place to live.... I'll send pics. Its just a bone stock 2000...

Lets see some close ups of the rear. What are those turn signals? What didyou do to the back of the frame after you cut it? Thats the same spot I plan on cutting mine.

It only has 842 miles... however, that means it has been sitting in my uncle's garage for 9 years. So, cleaning out the tank has been a pain.
In the future:
New paint ( i have already sanded the tank)
Building a solo seat
shortened turn signals
Clubman bars
Bar end mirrors
Duel Sport tires
Phase 2 will be having the frame powerdercoated black.

I have since painted over all the red except the valve cover and headlight ring. I knew at some point it would get new side covers so I went the easy route, and hammered slugs of aluminum into the frame rails and reinforced them with a plate. The side covers will attach at the tank screws, the M6 seat mount, and then bend into the tail light. I don't want it pretty though, thats kind of what I'm trying to do. I want it ugly...so who knows, I may never cover it.Just wish here in NY a plate mount curved at the swing arm was a little less frowned upon.
The signals are the smallest black ones my local dealer had in stock. Think they were $12 a pair. They are perfect, VERY bright, but I hate em at the same time. The bulbs are impossible to remove without breaking. I made my own rear bracket for the brake light, (which also serves as a horizontal frame brace), since I was on a strict budget, (how little can I spend?), but I also wanted to keep it because having the rear cut where it is, there is no protection from flying wheel debris. The light takes the back out over the mid point of the wheel and keeps stones and such off my back. I added a 1/4" lexan shield to the bottom of the light to protect it, and painted it black to remove the white light.

I like the idea that a cafe bike should be a tinge dirty.
I'm painting mine desert tan with matte finish (anyone know of a good/inexpensive matte clear coat that is gas proof?) so it should hold up ok to dirt.... did you pull everything to paint your frame?

I was lazy. Using strategic taping and plastic wrapping techniques learned in the darkest hours of night, I cheated and left the bike 50% intact for paint. Removed front & rear wheels, tank, lights, battery, stuffed all wiring into battery tray. Wrapped & taped forks, shock, bars, and motor. Then, went to town with the spray can. Only place that can easily be seen without looking hard is the inside of the steering stem. Everything else is covered.
Finding a good clear coat is tough unless you have the good paint setup. I didn't use a clear coat so I can't say from experience though. Try a search on the forums, lot of guys have done some nice paint work.
Well sheesh, maybe I should ton up and just do it that way.

The BikeMaster Mini Stalk Oval look like the ones I have. Would have to call my local shop and have them look for me....I've become a bit of a regular. I know they were under $20...found a few online for 15 plus shipping, so you might do ok at your local shop as well.
