Title: Cleaning Gas Varnish out of tank (or trying to)
Post by: TheFableTheFury on June 24, 2013, 11:13:50 AM
Its a 2000 GS that has been sitting for a few years. Nice layer of varnish in the tank. I have had lacquer thinner sitting in it for a few days, with a 2' link of metal chain as an abrasive object. The combo has knocked loose most of the varnish I can see, but it appears there is still some near the back. If lacquer thinner and a chain does not knock it lose, I do not know of anything that will, including gas... starting to wonder if I should just put some Rust Away in there to get out the surface/flash rust and then fill it full of gas and reattach to bike, hope for best.... There are small fuel filters linked into the fuel lines to catch any crap that is coming out.... Opinions?

Do not use any type of etcher/acid/alkali.

If you cant get it with lacquer thinner, I'd try acetone a little bit, or just try very hot water - but be very careful, that acetone sheite eats paint.
The chain, you dont want it to scratch up the innards of the tank, though electronically applied zinc is not that easy to scrape off without an actual tool behind it.

So, dont stick a chisel in there and try to scrape ...

Cool.

I don't think acetone will have much effect if the lacquer thinner does not. I am sanding the tank and re-painting anyway. Its a smooth metaled chain, so I hope it doesn't scratch... Once I drain it this time, and use the rustaway, I'm just filling with gas and going....
