Title: Oil/grease dripping from front hub
Post by: speedysst on June 27, 2013, 06:45:59 PM
I noticed today that there was oil dripping from the front hub onto my wheel.  It was quite hot today so I was wondering if it was just grease that was liquifying.  Thanks for the help!

If it is definitely only from the hub, then yes, it should only be axle grease, or some grease from the speedo socket. Just make sure it is not brake fluid dripping from your caliper.

Check your forks to make sure no fork oil is leaking.

I'll do that this morning but as I recall, the oil was coming from between the plastic cap type part and the hub.  The fork was my first thought but I'll check again just to be sure.

Nope!  Not from the forks so I guess its getting hot enough to melt the grease.  I think I may pick up a new bearing even though the one on the bike has only 5500 miles on it.

You want a dual steel seal bearing, and you want to seat it with the right tool.
Cool.

There doesn't seem to be much selection for front wheel bearings for the 2009 GS500F!  I saw some from Pivot but they were for 2006 which Id think would be the same.

Good to hear forkseals are OK. Lift front wheels to spin wheel and list and check for the smooth running of your bearing. Smooth and not gritty would be OK. Maybe keep watch on seal and clean and see if grease leaking out finishes in time. In grease bearing to much grease means hot running. High speed has less grease needed say bearing books. Maybe your bearing seals are  damaged by why this happen? Maybe just to much grease. Maybe just clean and watch situation for time?
Is your front tire wearing. Recommend if it is change at same time if bearing has to be replaced. This will save $$$$.
Good luck with your work.

Don't bother the wheel bearings if they're smooth and tight, just a little too much grease in the speedo drive I think.  Easy to pull wheel and clean a little out.  I tend to put a finger tip of grease in there when putting the front wheel back on and have had it seep out, just wipe it off with a rag and keep on going if I notice it.

I'll check that too.  When I got home two days ago after a 25 mile ride at about 70mph, I felt the hub and it was cool to the touch so its not overheating.  Im just planning a longer ride next month and dont want the front wheel seizing up.
