Title: Bike dies when kicked into 1st. Kick stand safety switch?
Post by: TheFableTheFury on June 28, 2013, 02:44:47 PM
2000 GS has been sitting several years. I just got it running. Starts ok. Kick down into 1st and dies immediately, before letting off clutch.

Rolled bike in 1st with clutch in and left off, gears caught, so clutch seems to be working.

Safety switch on kickstand? If it has been sitting 9 years with kickstand down, I'm guessing the switch may be bad.

Ideas?

Ways to check?

Bypass switch?

Yes, you are probably right.  Follow the wires from the switch, look for a loose connection.  Test it by bypassing (just connect the two wires together where you find the terminations) or use a continuity tester.

concur with Paulcet ! .. if wires check ok then squirt of lube up the shaft of the switch and jiggle it about too ...

and for humour.... and future reference... a handy chart and fix it kit ..  :D

Thanks! The center kickstand had cut the wire in half.
Spliced them back together, which was neither fun nor pretty, but now the bike won't start.
Will turn over with choke...revs to high rpm then dies... and thats only with a spray of starter fluid.
Was starting up fine earlier....

Pulled the spark plugs but they look fine. Looking down into the spark plug's hole, ideally what should I see?

Did you clean the carbs to get it running? If not, go ahead and do that. If so, go ahead and clean them again.

No. I didn't. I'm guessing that needs to be done.

It runs fine choked. As soon as I try to take the choke off or give it gas, dies.

I am trying to find a diagram of this but,

There is a hose that drops out of the front of the airbox and kinda just dumps out under the bike.
I am seeing gasoline dripping out of it.

Clean your carbs and jets and make sure your floats are set correct. This can cause the fuel issue in the overflow tube

I believe the overflow was from the petcock position. Now I just cant go. Just doesn't want to take gas. I can rev it and some times will rev to high rpm, sometimes it won't. Kick down into first, let off clutch, will start to move but just dies.

Ignore any symptoms, don't try to think of anything else.  Just do it, then come back and we will help you get your bike sorted.
