Title: tank/seat/sidepanels - what years fit what?
Post by: Joolstacho on July 15, 2013, 04:37:44 AM
My bike is an '89 E model. But it has a later type tank (that leaks) which has the 'scooped' shapings at the rear lower sides to fit the seat that wraps around the lower tank sides. The bike has the correct (for year) 'E' type seat (yes, with the bollock-crusher!) which has been horribly recovered by a blindman. The 'E' type sidepanels I have don't have a front mounting because there are no tabs on the tank for the front grommet sidepanel mount fixings.

So I've got a mismatch eh?

I'm not sure which component(s) to replace. I could fix the tank leak (hopefully), or get a good later style tank, but that still leaves me with a tank from a later model which doesn't have the sidepanel front fixing tabs. On the plus side I've got a better chance of getting a good tank from the wreckers, or fixing my leaking one. The seat would need recovering, but it doesn't suit my tank does it. I need to get to a wrecker to try to find what I need, but I need to know what'll fit what.

Would a later type seat fit my 'E' frame?
Would my 'E' model sidepanels fit with the later type seat if I make front fixings to add to the tank or frame? Or would I need to get later type sidepanels? Where is the front mounting point on the later sidepanels?

Are you as confused as I am?!!!  :cookoo:

I too would love to know if later model GS rear fairings fit the 90 model I am picking up. ;)

You can keep the newer tank with the older seat and fabricate some mount points for the older fairings or not bother as I have done on my 90 model. You cannot fit the new seat or the new fairings onto yours as the frame is slightly different as are the mounting points.
So you need the older seat and older side panels but can still use the newer tank without the mount unless you make some as one of the members here has done.
I chose to not bother on mine and have had no problems whatsoever.

Thanks mate, good useful info.
So I'll need to keep my older seat and sidepanels, and repair my (later type) tank - (or buy one without 'oles in it). Making up front mounting points for the sidepanels is no big deal, we can do that! What it boils down to then is that the later seat will not fit the frame -that seem right? But If it's just a matter of the old type sidepanels not fitting the later type seat, adapting the sidepanels is an easy job... just fibreglassing, too easy.

later seat and side panels will not fit your bike.
Any tank will fit but newer one needs tabs fabricated.
Is that clearer? Last rant I even confused myself :icon_rolleyes:

Yup, I gotcha mate... thanks for the clarification, now I know what to do.
Any ideas on where to get a good quality seat cover?
Cheers,

Not too hard to tackle yourself as many have done here. Would be far cheaper :dunno_black:
