Title: 90 Black Edition
Post by: Golly on July 15, 2013, 10:14:03 AM
Well looks like Wednesday I pickup my 90 Black with a swap for my 92 Red XJ600.  Currently un-registered the GS just needs a new front tyre and rego and its right to go.  Looking forward to modding her up and bringing some shine back to her.
More photos of it in some sun, but this is the only one I have of it so far.

Golly from Australia (Western Side being Perth) WOOT!

Where are you located? (State?)

I had notices an Cj for trade for a GS on craigslist in Michigan, did not know if that was you? I cant recall the city as I search more than I should.

:thumb: Well I went out and picked the old girl up today.  VIN number and REVS check listed her as a Red when original.
Here are some pics of it when it came home, sorry for bandwidth deprived people but Ive resized them but there is alot and a couple of shockers for you and I in the mix hahaha...

After a test ride, (now I wish I didnt when you see the pics) she starts first pop, a big flat spot around 4000 revs, but after that she pulls like a freight train and I was suprised how much more oooomph! the girl has compared to my XJ600 I had.

Come to pappa... you unloved beast.

The major depressing part.... rear fairing tabs under seat are snapped and looks like a new set is required as I cannot fibreglass to save myself.

Gap between seat and fairing normal ? also the front of the seat moves about an inch left to right under tank, also normal ?

All in all, I love the bike, love a good project, very happy with it considering its a legit LAMS bike for me and plenty powerfull considering I will more than likely keep her for many years to come enjoying the riding aspect of it.  Sorry for the thousands of questions I will fire at you, but I really would love to bring this bike back from near death... got myself a nice Haynes Manual and armed and ready!!!

I know. a silly question for me. i watched a doc about international prisons, and it documented one in/near perth. cannot remember the name of the facility though. im thinking it was ( not sure if spelled correctly. but casuarina? anyhoo enough of that Eh?, back to the bike. looks like im seeing a newer engine ( 97 onwards) with the silver case, but with the older head/cylinders.

Goodonya Golly, she'll be a beauty with some TLC.
It looks pretty similar to my '89... similar condition. (thanks to DHPO's) (whaddayareckon?)  :icon_lol:
I've spent the last few weeks working on mine methodically from front to back just fettling it, replacing the inevitable graunched fasteners and cleaning everything within a inch of it's life etc! Only way to do it properly is to disassemble each component assembly in turn and take care stripping and cleaning it all to get things right. I'll be doing a complete engine out/frame paint resto sometime, but my plan is to get everything schmick, then run it, and then later (if I like it enough) I'll pull the whole thing down for the complete resto.

I am really wanting a set of late model rear fairings and seat on my baby, what is involved to fit them ? Has there been any tutorials or posts by chaps or ladies who have set this up on an early model like mine ?

I am really loving Mauricio's bike at the back and would love to fit the newer style fairings on, mine is snapped in the fittings on the rear and will need to get new ones anyways....

not sure about europe or australia or elsewhere, but in us and canada ( i believe)  the 97 onwards were silver cases. so you might have a newer engine. which is always good m8. :)

Some more work done today.

Front sprocket cover removal, clean up of the inside and see what I am up against, looks ok so far.  Chain is a 520mx DID by the looks, gold/black job and the rear is a 39 already, so will see what the front is once removed.  Chain looks ok I think hehe.... also the frame is ok after a WD40 clean up and I am wondering if a repaint is really required....dunno.... Also found a nasty revealed positive wire from its sheath and would explain some issues electrically its had of late.  Found it has no horn, so I have a spare ready to go.

Looking forward to going shopping tomorrow, some clamps, fuel hose, filters and we will see how it goes, I think I am not going to paint the frame just yet, get it registered, then ride for a while then strip it down after that haha... too eager.
Also, is there a rattle can colour guide for the GS that anyone has compiled ?? If I can find a match for the frame, then touch ups can get me buy for the little rust spots.

Okie dokie... we have a couple of electrical issues, hopefully some help can be offered lmao!! hahaha..

New Headlight in, replacement 7inch whole unit, using existing H4 connector from harness.
ISSUE: Headlight does not come on with switch on right side, but the PASS flick button sets it off no issues there.

Indicators work a treat on the front, slow but ok, I dare say once motor is running they will be faster.

Idiot lights on guages all work no issues, bike is in NEUTRAL.

Wont kick over using the starter button, and engine kill switch is in the right place.

I have my front sprocket cover off currently, is this an issue ?

ahahhhh!!!!
This is just down the road, I will pay them a visit tomorrow and suss it out under the seat, making sure I have mine wired up correctly too hahaha...

Not to be insulting or anything, but maybe your clutch safety is still engaged and you have to pull the clutch to start the bike.

Worrying is a pain my man, a major pain.

We are getting there...installed new globes with coloured silicon caps to bring out some more colour into the light..not a bad effect. Ordered some more parts. New air filter, new dampers for behind the guages as they were cactus and perished and the relevent wire fasteners for the cables also fitted a horn I had from the old bike that still works...now to find the wires for it...mmm

Got most of the harness inside the light housing. Very happy with the outcome.

Now my starting issue....screwdriver across starting relay kicks her in the guts...so the relay is ok???? No action via the starter button. The power to the button is all good via a check using a light probe. Also same for kill switch..

... So there's a break or melted wire/plug down on the other end of the circuit..closer to the starter? ... Trace that wire colour down the harness and find the 'section' that is dead !  :thumb:

Clutch safety switch is in series with the starter button.
are you pulling in the clutch? or have you bypassed the safety switch? Broken safety switch? Not connected?

Remember a bike must be in neutral OR the side stand up for it to run. That's a safety circuit so you don't ride with the side stand down.

Ok here is where its weird...there is no plugs on the clutch safety switch on the lever..never had any before the pulldown and it started prior....now what are the wires that run to that switch ? I can look later via the manual but if u guys have a heads up it will be a bonus haha... Ive reconnected everything in the light housing according to hits colour. Got the horn working indicators..park lights tail and stop lights all work. All power to those aspects are working aok... Going to do chain and sprockets then rassemble today then attack this electrical bug...grrr

Wups my bad.... Thought to look again.... BOTH wires are thin black and have a yellow stripe ... Without pulling the cluster apart it looks like they enter into the edge of the cluster 'pod' at the very end of sheath and then exit back out to the safety switch... Shows how good 'memory' is..  :icon_rolleyes:

... Buuuuut ... I have a k6 F ... If you have a 90 'EN' (US) model .... Then according to the Haynes wiring diag ... If you have a standard 90 harness..

Hmmmm... Picture makes a thousand words ....but how many words to convey a picture? ..

...on right side ... Starter switch has orange with white stripe coming in from kill switch ... Then out to yellow with green stripe , which leads across harness to a inline 'resistor?' .. Still yellow with green stripe into another 'resistor?' Then into the starter relay ... Other side of starter relay is on solid black wire to starter motor plus a black with white stripe which is the common 'bike wide' negative to battery...

... Also ... The position of the clutch safety is different in the diagram ... My k6 diagram shows the switch as in the harness wire bundle along with the left cluster switches ....I think ... But your 90 diag shows it as 'located' not in that actual 'bundle' but more like down 'near' the starter relay? ...

But this could be just for the diagram.... Otherwise the clutch safety switch is located down near the other end of the clutch cable near/in the entry to the gear case? ... I've never looked at a live 90 era bike so I don't know the real physical location.... It would make sense to still locate it on the lever ... But the diagram makes it ambiguous ... So definately confirm with one of the 90 era owners here just where the safety switch is located...

I don't mean to make it confusing for location... Just most wiring diagrams I have looked at in my amateur viewpoint do usually show 'roughly' the location in the 'laid out flat' harnesses... :dunno_black:

VHT Extreme Heat matt Black, then VHT Extreme Heat clear coat over the top to bring out the colour, the matt is very matt and quite dull.

nice bike
couple questions/observations
that frame is WAY to clean to have 33clicks on it and you said you didn't paint it.
the swingarm looks stock paint.... black was not a 90 option
the wheels look stock paint... black not option in 90
engine looks like it had bottom end replaced.... already noticed on page 1
you got the kewl stock clip-ons NON-USA
when you take the carbs apart do they have stock adjustable needles?

your workmanship looks good.  keep it up

Haha this bike is 90 via the vin on our national register..might go into suzuki for conformatiion on it. It was red..little bit shows under the tail piece. Also wheels were white as you can see via the chips on the hub on the front wheel. This bike has been built from a collection of bits as Im still figuring out what actual year it is.  GOOD NEWS!!!!! BRAIN FART MOMENT i had the 4 pin black relay into the wrong white connector. Sucks having two 4 pin adapters in the same area lmao!!!!! Good thing is she kicks over via all switches...now to give it some fuel...some reason it back fired a little then just kicks over no fire yet lolol

Bit of a dampener today, got it all together, battery charged up, and what happens......  :2guns: fuel comes out of the airbox down the overflow tube, so I have a float issue or a blockage somewhere.  This gives me an excuse to do a couple of things.

1.  Tank is off, rust inside, so a good clean, a petcock rebuild and prep for spray.
2.  Give both carbs an overhaul and new bits!!!
3.  Whilest carbs are off, take out motor and add new Suzuki plates and respray the motor.
4.  What the hell, whilst the motor is out, may as well do the frame as well.... sooooo a minor blockage has caused
me to bite the bullet and give this 23 year old bike the love it deserves.

hahahaha...  :cookoo:

Some more work on the girl today, new custom rear side reflectors, used mega heat shrink to pad the alloy bar to stop vibration against the tie down bars.  Also got some bar end bling, using the new mirrors for rego pass.  Also a clean up of the engine  and underside.  Second hand carbs being picked up on Friday for $220 from a running wreck, so pretty stoked about that.  Those air/fuel screws are solid stuck, unable to remove even with easy out.

Preeeetty and the colour scheme has been decided.  Black, Blue and Silver.

Well.....thought everything was fine...noticed the black was a little sluggish up through the low rev band....then...bang!!! Haha exhaust fire blast..not flame but boom ....
So...pulled the plugs and since I put the new ones in one of them is clean as the day it was put in.... And one side of the block is warm to touch compared to the working side where spark is..same with the headers...so

So took the right coil back to the mob I got it off. Tested aok....so looks like its going onto that purple trailer and down to the shop for a diagnosis as I have reached my skill limit and I am that close I can smell it....dont want to stuff er up. My electrical limit is rewiring indicators and lights....dont have the patients or tools to test and diagnose the harness break or loom issue.

Firstly, coils were fine, the CDI shat itself, only firing on one side, replaced that, wholy poooo it is quick now on two cylinders lmao!!!!!

No polarity at all for stator wires. Connect them any way you wish. Old harnesses had a jumper cable in the harness that went from 3 barrel connectors to a 3 pin connector at the regulator. You should be able to ignore the barrel connctors and go right to the regulator and plug the new stator in - bypassing the jumper cable in the harness.

Cheers Adidas....just to clarify the three male female connectors are coming from the battery end. The 3 pin plug is coming from the new stator. So theoretically I can cut that three pin and put connectors on and plug anyone of those yellow wires into anyone of the wirea shown in the photo ? And she would be ok to go ?

Picked up a Motodry Tank bag/carrier yestersday, not bad, $115 large magnets underneath and pretty sturdy.
Looking at it for a small tool, kit, first aid, torch and chain/locks carrier until I can get a box on the back.
Good GPS and phone clear pouch on the top too.

Well I figured I would give the fork seals a go. So far so good. Just waiting on the parts from Suzuki to arrive tomorrow. New seals 20$ for the pair. Genuine cant argue. Now upon dismantling my forks The two large metal spacers on top of the springs are 280mm and 274mm ??? Should they be the same ?

Next query....left shock has no spring seat washer..do I need the real deal or would a general washer of the same size do ?

The washer on the spring is important. If you don't have one, any washer 29.5 to 30mm will work. I often use extra valve shims in the forks.
While you're in there, why not upgrade the springs? Buy those Sonics for sale on the board.
It would be good to replace the bushings. If they are worn (especially the top one) the seals will go bad sooner than they should.

If runs on reserve, then not a full tank. By the shape of out tank, if the level is 1/2 then you are on reserve. Most of the gas is up in the front when it is full. Looking down the filler hole, you're looking at the small deep end.

I have had a few calls from friends wondering why their bike won't run when it "looks like half a tank". No, you're out of gas. Put on reserve then go fill up. Fill up by hand so the gas comes to the lower part of the fill tube. You can't stick the nozzle in and let it auto-shut-off. Do that and you get 2 gallons in a 4 or 5 gallon tank.

You did say when you switched to reserve she ran fine. Problem solved! Fill her up. You're out of gas.

Yeah either not filled up enough or clogged line.  He did say the tank was full, but as you say it depends on how he "measured" full.

Filled it just before the ride...just under the lip of the tank...brim full.....havent checked it since...will take a look and see if it chewed the fuel to needing reserve..was only about 40kms...doubt it though....lol..bad economy if thats the case haha...

Now very odd....my bike has what looks like a stock exhaust but its a larger main pipe....got my circlip on top notch of five....but my sweet spot with those US air fuel screws is 2.75 turns out...on 3 it bogs down at 6000rpm. At 2.75 turns it screams all the way through till the teens...woot Now for a carb sync and she is set

Errr...  More like the old straw trick.  Put a straw in a glass of water and put your thumb on the top of the straw to seal it off.  Pick the straw up out of the glass of water and the water in the straw can't escape until you break the vacuum caused by your thumb on the top.

These carbs are gravity fed, so it doesn't take a whole lot of restriction to slow or stop the flow of gas.

Fuel/air/spark. . The 3 essentials. ..

spark weak but battery full. .. bad coil/s or bad lead connections?  Or signal generator thingy?

Carbies tuned. . But are you getting actual fuel flow? Tank petcock open? Or some similar? Primed bowls?

Airbox connection/s correct and tight? Compression ok?

Its gotta be a simple 1 item out of whack by now ... yeah?

"The carby dude" .. you trust his work implicitly?  .. not saying his error but it happens!
