I have a '06 GS500F with a slipon Yoshi TRS and right now the carb is stock except for the fact I've pulled out the idle mixture brass caps and adjusted. Like everyone else, I've noticed the bike is running lean. On hard deceleration there is a lot of popping, particularly on a cool day.
I decided it would be a good investment to rejet the carbs, and if I'm going to do that I figured I might as well by a K&N Lunchbox (RU-2970) and do it all at the same time. I ordered the K&N online and while I was waiting for it to arrive, I went into the my local shop to see if I could source some jets.
Talking to the guy in the store, he suggested that I order the Dynojet kit because it "has everything you need". At the time I wasn't entirely sure what the Dynojet kit was other than he kept saying it has "everything I need". I specifically mentioned to him that I had the new high flow K&N in the mail, and that the lean condition would only get worse once I put it on. A bit reluctantly, I agreed to go with the expert and ordered the kit.
Last week the Dynojet kit arrived and it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I read through the instructions and it only suggest 1 size jets for normal exhaust, and 1 size for high flow exhaust. It doesn't mention anything about intake modifications. Then I noticed on the instructions it says "Stage 1" which from what I understand is stock or slightly modified intake.
I called up Dynojet support to see what the deal is and the said it's indeed meant for no/slight modifications to the intake. The guy took a few minutes to look up "a stage 3 kit" (I think it might have been the 98-00 kit, since I can't confirm a stage 3 exists for 04+) and said it suggest starting with 134 jets, but my stage 1 kit only includes 120,124,128,132. He said I can try starting with the 132, but it might be a little lean. Great.
I tried going back to the shop and returning the kit, but they said because it's special order they won't accept returns on it. I didn't realize at the time of purchase that it was "special order", and no one mentioned to me that I couldn't return it. I also went in there looking for specific jets, and bought it on the advice of the shop mechanic who, again, I explicitly told I had a K&N lunchbox in the mail and said it would "include everything I need", which it doesn't.
Can anyone make a suggestion or help with this? Am I correct in thinking there is no stage 3 kit for the 04-10 models? If I did spend even more money (which I don't want to do) to get some bigger dynojet jets, is that a good route to go or should I cut my losses and start over. Is there a reason there is no stage 3 kit? Has anyone got a stage 1 kit working well with a K&N Lunchbox?
Right now I'm out about $70 for a kit that I don't want. I feel like if I try and use it, it won't make things better, but might make them worse.
I'm planning to go back to the shop and talk specifically with the same guy that recommended the kit to me, and see what he says. I'd would even be happy with store credit, but they didn't want to do that. For now I'm assuming the worst and thinking he's going to pin this on me saying I didn't tell him about the filter, or tell me it's fine and to just use it anyway, or tell me to pay him and he'll just handle it for me.
It's their mistake, they should pay for it... At the very least allow you to return with a restocking fee...
Buddha can get you the exact setup you need that are genuine mikuni parts... Direct replacement for your existing jets. PM him for the info. The cost is way cheaper than the dyno jet, and he has it down to a science on exactly what you need.

Thanks for the reply.
Went in and talked to them again last night, and explained a little more what was going on. The guy didn't seem happy, but he agreed to return it for a restocking fee. I really don't think I should even have to pay that, since they told me this was the kit to get, but I wasn't going to push my luck.
The refund, even without the restocking fee, was more than enough to pay for a kit from Buddha. Feel a lot better about my situation now, and I can't wait to get the jet kit so I can put everything together and see what kind of a difference it makes.
Excellent man. I was going to say if you paid with a credit card then you had some power regardless of if they wanted to return it or not. Glad it somewhat worked out.
My bike came with stage 1 and I really do have it working correct with my aftermarket exhaust. I just drove a stock bike and its a completely different feel than minwe through the entire RPM range. However I have stock intake with a true OEM filter not the highflow, etc.
Buddha will get you setup correctly and since you didnt drill the slides you are protecting future problems.
Again glad this worked out for you in the end. My bike came with the dynojet kit so I have run with it and been happy so far.
Yeah, I'm glad it didn't come to that!
They said it would be possible to get mine working with a stage 1, but I'd have to order bigger jets, which they could do. I think when he saw my face he realized that wasn't something I was interested in doing. I'm not going to order more jets because the kit that has "everything I need" doesn't have the jets I need.
I don't think the 04+ kits have you drill the slides like the <00 does. I opened the kit and saw a drill bit which scared the crap out of me, but then I read through the instructions and it's only for drilling the idle mixture plugs. I kind of laughed when I saw they include your average metal screw for pulling them out. I would definitely be nervous about drilling anything, as I don't exactly have the most professional setup.
those plugs would almost pop out with a toothpick.... well almost.
