Title: Why being the computer guy at a company sucks...
Post by: john on July 18, 2013, 11:15:34 AM
Recent stupid shaZam! I have had to deal with...

person: My iphone does not send mail any longer.  It was working a few days ago...
me: Looking at settings everything seemed fine.  I compared things to other iphone user settings, and they worked.  after getting nowhere I go mach and talk to the user.  After a few minutes they say "well I got a new phone a few days ago.  Maybe that's when it stopped."  ...Default personal email account was set to a non working account.  Waste of time...

Person:  My printer stopped working.
me:  Ask if the cables are connected.  Told yes.  Asked to check to make sure it is on and cables connected.  Go out to look at.  ...power button turned off...

VPN stopped working.  Ask boss of he made any changes recently.  Said no.  Searched errors, checked everything.  Found access had been turned off.  Later boss says "oh yea, I think I did make some changes to that."

Person: I can't access email.  Nothing works.
me: Ask if web interface works.  Yes it does, but Outlook does not.  I suggest to use web interface until I am available.  No, must use outlook.  Drive to site, look at laptop.  Outlook in offline mode.  This is the 100th time I have talked to this user about this.

There is more, but you get the jist.  Lately it has been stupid shaZam!.  I am getting to the end of my rope.  Need a few days off again...

Man I used to do Tech Support for a global DSL provider and we would get all kinds of stupid people.

I went from Tier 1 to T2 to T3 and then to Presidential Escalations and thats when it got really ugly

I miss not one day of it.

I feel your pain.
Today, after 6 months of planning, one day before our go live date of our new phone system,  Verizon calls and says they can only port over (move) 7 out of 208 phone lines to the new carrier.

Thankfully most of my days are like this

What sucks is this shizam! is everywhere, no matter your field... for some reason it is tolerated on a wide scale, and I will never understand it...

I have a theory... First world countries indeed have more stupid people than those that are not first world.  Mainly, I contribute this to modern medicine and societal contraints... The theory is that these countries inherently allow bad genes and traits (those connected to general stupidity too) to continue on because they are able to support it... natural selection, and species evolution is slowed and nearly stopped due to modern medicine and societal constraints...

So as long as we are able to support population growth, and as long as modern medicine and society maintains its values which say everyone deserves life, etc... there will be stupid people...

Sounds harsh I'm sure, but that's the short of it...

One of my top 10 favorite movies. If you can't see the humor in Idiocracy, then you are part of the joke.

I openly tell the users I support every IT guy goal is to do nothing but surf the web all day. If I can do that all day I'm doing my job well. This means everything is running like it should and they are getting their monies worth. They have nothing else to say.

I do a lot of surfing. I'm almost to the end of the internet.

The problem with that flow chart is the 30 minute part.  If it takes me more than two minutes I say I will look into it and google the issue.  I usually find the answer within minutes then wait an hour before getting back.
