Post by: fireyphoenix1989 on July 19, 2013, 07:22:42 AM
Bought a GS 500 the other day ....1995 21000 miles taxed and MOT £350
Bargain.
Riding home averaging 7000 rpm lost power pulled over and couldn't restart hell i thought the engine had seized, got a trailer to get home.

stripped bike down....it aint pretty

Magnetic rotor has disintegrated that bit thats sticking up was jammed in the stator plates and thats what had jammed engine :(.

Epoxy on the windings seems to have cracked in a few places

Yup, that's goats alright.
Cant be prevented 100% ... but crashing on the left causes some of it.
Rotors that have not been tightened properly and manufacturing defect are the other causes.
Cool.

Is that an OEM alternator?  With 4 magnets and 12 windings?

I took the following photo of OPTheory's bike, which I believe was an '89 model.  But the Hillsboro parts fiche for the '95 model year show the same 6-magnet, 18-winding arrangement.

Hmmm....

Knew it looked off other than being a mess.  Definitely not OEM.  Nice eye, Kerry.

So what the hell is in this then ?.... its 12 windings and 4 big magnets .

Thanks for the parts offers, im good atm:).
Got spare bike and 2 complete (but damaged) engines cheap enough to use for parts and a restoration project .

Not GS500 OEM parts.
Perhaps Kawasaki EX500 parts?
Even the bolt holding it on is not the correct looking bolt.
Get the right parts and you should be OK.

I've opened up 1989 and 2009 engines: magnet rotor and stators are the same. always 6 magnets.

Watched your video haha some good tips .

trying to get together bolts and such to pop the whole assembly off ....just hope the GS500 method works on this rotor :(

Maybe who ever replaced it was trying to avoid goats haha
