The microfiche for year '97 has the fuel and reserve hoses mislabled, they should be reversed, part #5 is the reserve hose and part #6 is the main fuel hose. I'd assume that error would be on the exploded view diagrams for the gas tap and petcock on other years as well. Is there a reference on the site for other errors in the microfiches or manuals?
Also if you install the gas tap & filter assembly as shown in the manuals and microfiche, the fuel hoses must cross over one another rather than run parallel, making for a very tight squeeze alongside the air filter box. Reversing the position of the gas tap solves that problem, but you'll need an extra long screwdriver to reach the gas tap on/off valve, but it's doable.
I believe the "fuel hoses and petcocks" aspect is the most misdocumented / misunderstood part of the bike. You are right; the fuel hoses from the tank should not cross over each other on the way to the frame-mounted "fuel selector switch".
Here are some images for '89 to '00 models that I annotated almost a decade ago now. Hope they help!
From my old Clymer manual:

From my Haynes manual (items 1 and 3-6 are specific to California):

EDIT: For good measure, here are a couple of pics from my unmodified '99...

From the front of the bike. ('R' stands for "REServe")

I just always try to remember that the long nipple on the tank petcock is the reserve line, and that goes to the back of the frame petcock.
Hahah .. You said long nipple! ;)
... Ahem ... Sorry ... Good info though lads!! :thumb:
Those fiche pages are incorrect for years 89-02 in that the frame petcock is shown as seen from the left side of the bike and the tank petcock is as seen from the right side and they have confused many people until they were finally made right for the 04 and later F models.
I made up these drawings years ago correcting the ones in the fiches to show how they look with both petcocks shown from the left side. The fuel hoses do actually cross on the 01-02 models only and it is possible to get the hose crossing caught right behind the clutch cable in such a manner the engine will run out of gas and stop a block from home, I have a 02 model:

I'll take your word for it! :thumb: I removed the third diagram from my earlier post.
