Title: High engine revs... Baffled
Post by: woodyduc on July 25, 2013, 02:55:56 PM
Okay so i bought this gs500e it came with a second engine from a wrecked bike... Swapped out the engines and finally got the idle adjust screw for the carbs so cross my fingers yay it starts....

BUT now here is the problem.... When it does start it does one of two things...

Senario one: it starts Isles at about 1k rpm the choke does nothing and twisting the throttle does nothing the bike will either die after a min or two of idling or it revs up to 10k or 11k rpm and now if you turn the throttle the throttle works brings it up to red line but it never goes back down to regular idle...

Senario two: you start up the bike it goes straight to 11k rpm the throttle works but the rpms down come down or anything

I have played with the idle adjuster on the carbs has not really helped the carbs were just completely cleaned so not sure where to go....

Any ideas?

Physically look at the butterfly valves with the engine off to make sure the throttle cable is opening and closing them. You said twisting the throttle does nothing? I'd say you butterflies are stuck open.

Bug rich you were right now I'm idle okay but it sticks so need to probably sync the throttle body and play with the idle screws on the carb is it inwards to lean out and out to richer?

On the pilot screws? Yes in is closing them off and leaning it out.

I think for a stock bike its 2.5-3 turns as a starting point on both carbs.

So in all the way then back it out 3 turns correct?

Correct. And I'd like to add: "in all the way" just means until it gets resistant. It's possible to break the mixture screws by going in too tight.

I think you were suggested to look at the butterflies/slides while it was running earlier in this thread. keep in mind you need to have the air filter in while testing or you will run lean. No point in dialing it in with the air filter out.

just wanted to mention that.
