97 gs500 1700 miles before i start i know theres another page on al of this but i need help. Just cleaned carbs a gas tank tested for air leaks an both cable are set properly enough slack anboth move just fine. After the bike has been running for a while (warmed-up) while riding it begins to studder bring back to the garge imediatly an let run.for 5 mins an its idles low an wants to die when it eventually dies it wont start i turn the idle screw a couple turns each direction an srill nothing as soon as it cools down runs fine no hovering an no studder then it warms back up an same thing. A couple days before i was batteling a hovering idle(ghost idle). Im so lost ive been a mechanic for 3 years now and can not figure this out. I know it is either getting to much fuel or air hence the ghost idle burning extra fuel or air left in combustion chamber could it be the air mixture jet ( the one an only adjustable jet in.the carb seeing as mine has never been drilled out to get at the other) i set them 3 turns out. Wondering.if thats to much for stock jets. Help! I want to ride before the snow comes!
I know its a long message and alot to take in. If anybody could throw me a bone here
When you cleaned the carbs out, did you examine the diaphragms for any holes or tears? Also, have you checked the valve clearances?
Also, the idle adjuster really shouldn't be used for anything more than initially setting the idle. Once you have the idle dialed in, leave the adjuster screw alone.
+1 for valve clearances
I will check them but the only thing i have to say is the bike only has 1700 miles is that enough to cause them to wear out? Im sure anythings possible at this point
Oops, wrong post...
Ok i checked vavle clearence all are within spec. Pulled carbs apart again to.make sure all o rings were there an check for cracks. Only thing i changed is i messed with mixture screws turned em in an the bike would barely run. Then tryed turning em out a little no more ghost idle but when the bike starts getting hot the bike studders or hesitates. Back at my garage while still hot tryed diff things with choke on ran better give throttle hesitates. Pulled plugs they are white as hell. So bikes running lean.
So my next question the mixture screw on the bottom of the carb is this a air or fuel mixture screw?
