How do you remove the gray plastic piece that the slide rides in? The other end seems to be the end the main jet screws into? Worth removing? carbs are from an 89
If it has been a while since they were last removed, they may take some finagling. You don't need to remove the bottom part, it'll come out as a unit.

So how do I get them out?
Do at your own risk, however I have done this and been fine.
I put the main jet back in almost all the way, and lightly tap on it to unseat the slide.
Remember this is brass and I again have done this more than once on more than one set of carbs and have had no ill side effects.
There is an oring under there. Its not suggested to be replaced, some people have.
I took them out as I didnt want to ruin that oring when I cleaned the carbs with heavy carb cleaner.. in my mind they need to come out to protect that oring.

I thread in a spare main jet, put a piece of wood over the jet, and give it a mild shwack with a hammer. Do this at your own risk--as stated before, the jet and the threads are all brass, and are not at all difficult to damage.
To remove my slides I put the handle end of a screwdriver against the plastic and smacked it with my palm until it came out.
