Hi All,
Cleaned the carbs after bringing home my new '02. Various Main and Pilot jets were completely blocked as I have previously posted. The bike is running great but does not require any choke to start. It starts the first time, every time, with no choke. After its running for a min or so I can give it 1/3 choke to raise the idle to 2k but have to increase the choke very slowly as too much will kill the engine every time. After a few minutes at 2k the idle will rise to 4k on its own and I then take the choke off and it settles into a smooth idle at 1200 rpm.
Given all the threads about idle issues is this normal behavior or indicative of some problem?
Thanks
If it starts fine and runs fine without any choke, why are you using the choke at all after that? You should only use the choke for starting.
If anything, that is a good GS500 starting experience... not having to use choke. It is true, many GS500 owners experience cold-bloodedness and need a couple minutes of choke when starting. But if yours does not, then great!.. and do not use unless you have to. Your bike should be able to idle around 1200 rpm consistently when warmed-up, and you can then ride without fear of it stalling from just being cold.
When you cleaned the carbs, did you take note of the jet sizes, or any washers under the needles? Many folks change the jetting or add washers to richen the mixture to help with cold starts and leanness from the factory... so that could easily be the reason why you don't need choke... its not a bad thing. Just report back if the bike does anything like leak gas from airbox, or rev higher without throttle or choke... that would be something to look into.

How is the bike on a hot restart. Like ride it 20 mins and then turn it off, and attempt to start.
If you dont get that to start up fine, you're too rich. Else, worry about somehting else for now, you're fine, some bikes can be so rich down low, and still work fine.
Cool.
