Post by: Blairbee on July 28, 2013, 04:53:32 PM
I've got a 03 gs500 not knowing anything about bikes a purchase should have looked around more and now stuck with this pile of issues anyhow at this point looking to replace motor ........would like to know if anyone could or has a link to what this bike is suspose to sound like so I can compare to what I've got and if I do replace the motor does it have to be the same year or can it be from say a 2000-2008 motor thanks for the help!!

Why do you think you need to replace the motor?

Well I've had problems getting it to start needs to be choke if its 50 degrees or 95 degrees took it to a local shop to have the carbs worked on and there telling me that they think there is a issue with either the a wrist pin or a crank bearing sounds like it would be more cost effective to find a motor than fix this one......there isn't a Suzuki dealer within a two hour ride so here I am looking for a bit of advice and like I was saying earlier a link to a utube video of a similar bike at stat up and idol that would be great

if you need choke to start when its that warm I would guess your bike is either lean or in need of a valve adjustment or both.  If you search utube you will find tons of videos with running gs500's   post up a video of yours and let us hear it.

Starting your bike "warm" is not really a reference to ambient temperature. You may need les choke on a hot day, and more and longer on a cold day,  but a warm engine is one that has been recently running and is most likely too hot to touch.  The damage the mechanics describe sounds more likely to have occurred due to running low on oil I think, but has nothing to do with your carb.  Sorry to hear of your bad luck but it sounds like a new engine is the last expensive option if the assessment is correct. Did the bike have other symptoms?

Post videos and where outside the USa are you located? Your location is not in your profile andthe 2003 was not sold in the USA.
Knowing your location helps - there may be a member near you that will help you or at least serve beers and pizza while you work on your bike and engage in stimulating conversation on cats (or guns)

Ok, so you need to use the choke to start the bike whether the air temp is hot or cold? Sounds normal to me.

Summer or Winter I need to use the choke to start my 09 which I've had since new. Full choke to start and let it rev to whatever, after 30 seconds to a minute, reduce choke to around 2k rpm. Put on jacket, helmet, gloves, then sedately ride away. After a couple of clicks I turn the choke off.

If the bike is progressively harder and harder to start, first thing to check is the valve clearances.

So as far as I see it, needing to use the choke on a GS500 regardless of ambient air temp is normal for this bike and your bike seems normal. A bike shop telling you to replace this or that, without knowing that GS500s are cold-blooded and need to have valve clearances checked with hard-to-start symptoms, is not a bike shop I would put a lot of trust in.

Wristpin OR Crankshaft Bearings? How did they determine this I wonder. At this stage without hearing your bike ourselves, I am questioning their diagnosis as anything other than a money spinner for them.

What "work" did you have them do on the carbs?

Ok here's the deal 1: I live in Windsor Ontario 2: after purchasing the bike this spring I put about 400kms on it I changed the oil drove about another 100kms it started to sound like a old typewriter had the valve shims replaced was solved that issue but now a new noise which is an internal knock between 1200-2200 RPM  then goes way 3: the bike really doesn't want to idol the previous owner said hebebuit the carbs and don't really have confidence in his work figured get someone who knows what they are doing to make that right try to get the rest of the season out this then do a motor swap over the winter just my thoughts 4: when u get the bike back I will make a video and see if I can post it so it can be heard to get further opinions thanks again
