Title: Battery again or starter
Post by: wolfs02shadow on July 29, 2013, 04:11:50 PM
I have an 04. The battery was acting up so I went to the dealer got a new. Going to make this short as possible. when I put the meter on the battery is shows it is charging. 13 volts at around 2 r p m s and it hits 14 at around 5 r p m s. when the bike is cold it's starts no problems but when I let it warn up for just about 5 min. The battery will ack like its dead. Barely turning over a couple of times then click click dead. The meter shows the battery is at around 12.60 volts but when I hit the starter button the battery will drop to as low as 3 volts. When I let off the battery will go back to around 12.40. Took the battery to auto zone and advance auto and both test came up bad battery. Could hold a load. Took it back got a new battery and now the same thing. Battery dead at only a five min warm up. You think another bad battery or is it the starter pulling to many volts. It's just hard to think two bad battery's.   thanks.

It is possible the regulator is bad. When it gets warm, it could be over charging the battery, thus killing it.
Wire in a volt meter. Watch the voltage as you ride a little and things warm up. It should never go above 15 volts. Mid 14's is proper when running and the battery is charged up. It can start out in the 13's but would soon get up to the 14's and remain there. It will fluctuate a little with RPMs.

Starter could be going bad as it gets hot.
Cool.

What is killing me is that it only takes about five minutes of running. The battery charged I can put the meter on the battery and it starts fine the volts don't drop. I watch the meter let the bike run for about five min. Rev up to 2000 watching the meter it's fine. Rev up to 5000 and watching the meter it never goes over 14.  I repeat this then turn the bike off then hit the button the volts drop. Thanks for the advise ill go by and get a meter and watch it while I am riding. Is there a way to bench test the starter.

sounding more like bad connections at batt or engine ground or even starter (could involve starter brushes too)
