Title: Voltage or current increase when front break level pressed
Post by: Peco on August 05, 2013, 12:14:05 AM
Hi all,

Ive carried out a search and been reading through lots of post but haven't read any about this issue.
My battery is dead, the starter solenoid is clicking and the bike needs bump started to get going. I have bought, and am about to install a new battery.

What I noticed though, is that if I let go of the front break level (depress) the bike wants to cut out when riding. If i hold it in slightly, the front light gets brighter and the bike runs more smoothly (less likely to cut out)

The small switch that clicks over when the lever is pressed is simple and bypassing it does not resolve the issue.

I don't know if it is related but worth mentioning. The tachometer works intermittently, I can be riding and its fine and then the next minute it is at 0. It will then bounce up and down registering current revs and then zero. I followed the wiring through the headlight and i think, back to the battery but couldn't work it out so I disconnected it thinking it may be causing the funny power issue but they remained....

Background -  I crashed the bike outside my house (less than 5-10kph) and broke open the alternator cover and alternator. It was repaired /replaced but I don't believe the job was to a good standard and I'm not sure the battery is charging properly. I bought a multi meter and found a guid on here on how to check the charging system and will do tonight.

Year of bike? E or F?

If you did enough damage to crack open the side cover and hurt the stator, you will really want to be sure that it is fixed properly. It all sounds like there is a pretty decent electrical short going on. I would assume something happened to the bars/grips when you dumped it as well, and good chance one of the control connections is being pinched.

Thanks for the reply, the bike is a 2009 GS500E (no fairings)
The repair was carried out by a mechanics, under insurance as there was also damage to the tank.
The crash was low speed, it was just unfortunate that the stator section clipped an elevated section of kerb, next to a storm drain

Would there be a way a could track the short using a multimeter ?
