When I go to rebuild the carbs I'm thinking about running stainless steel fuel lines. Trying to figure what the sizes are so I don't get the wrong ones.. I feel like they would be easier to maintain than the stock fuel hoses
I don't have the packaging handy, but I know you can do SS fuel lines. I have them =). The only issue I came across was that I needed a reducer to run a line from the petcock to the carbs. The outlet on the petcock was bigger than the inlet on the carbs. Unless I set it up wrong... It was a while ago, so I may have to take a second look...
5/16"
With they being said, I have a brand new pack of 3ft still in the packaging hanging on the shop wall if you're interested
No reducer necessary..? I screwed up somewhere, then lol.
No reducer, it will fit fine on the tank petcock nipples and the frame petcock nipples will be tight.
go 1/4 not 5/16th.
*Well that holds for regular fuel line. The 5/16 has a tendency to leak.
I have no idea on Stainless though and weedahoe knows his stuff so I concede.
With 5/16 being tight on the frame petcock, I don't see 1/4 fitting on it
1/4 fits all day I have done 3 that way as many others have too. Buddha was the one that mentioned 1/4 in a thread I bought both sizes and 1/4 ID fits.
I agree with & use stainless brake lines.What's the reasoning behind stainless fuel lines cos their under very little pressure........longevity,robustness,looks?
IDK how you would even connect stainless lines with nipples on the petcocks
I used band clamps to attach mine.
Like this (please ignore the zip tie... I've been having issues with that darned prime connector):

Does O.D matter at all?
O.D. does matter. I accidentally bought automotive fuel hose and it has a much larger O.D. than the fuel lines that we use. They are so thick that I wouldn't have been able to run them through the passages on the side of the airbox.
Would these fit? Just trying to get a general understanding of the sizes

Where did you buy yours?
Advance Auto near my house. They should be at any auto parts store, really.
Here man this is exactly what you need. You will have it in a few days time, literally they ship so fast you will be blown away.
Go tygon if you want the best(better) or just get the regular if your not worried. I have used both.
http://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/118/124/=kplfa1
5187K63 its 0.61 (cents) a foot.
Tygon in same size is this number:
5552K25 @ $1.49 a foot.
If you want get this braided cover to protect the outside from abrasion and UV rays:
9337K1
4-6ft of each and you will have enough if you cut one short. I used 4ft and got away with it, but I wish I had more now..
I promise you this will work I have used it over and over again on more than one GS.
1/4 ID 3/8 OD
Hi all,
The problem I have experienced is hooking up the new fuel lines at the gas tank petcock, where the hose nipples are so close together that there's no room for clamps on each hose if the outside diameter of the fuel line is too large.
I used some Honda motorcycle fuel line that is correct on the inside diameter, but the outside diameter is so large that I can't get a clamp on each hose to secure it.
Right now I only am using one clamp on one fitting and I don't like that at all.
So 1/4 inch Tygon, is that the ticket adidas, Jack and Buddha?
What do you guys run?
Thanks,
Trwhouse :)
Yeah, no clamp is bad idea... Learned that the hard way. That boy started leaking like crazy after a ride and I had to fly to my tool box to get the tank unbolted as it just drained all over my driveway. No way to stop the flow other than the under tank Petcock when that line is leaking from that connection... So think about that before you decide to ride without a clamp on those lines, and especially that one under the tank.
And oh yeah, that above happened with those thick fuel lines I couldn't get clamps around under the tank :icon_rolleyes:....
I ended up replacing that experience above with 1/4" tygon, and never looked back. Tight on the frame Petcock but perfect under the tank. Use a little dab of oil (MMO if you've got it) on the frame Petcock lines to help you get them on. If you don't want the yellow lines to show, buy the sleeve to put over them, or use your original OEM sleeves.

I was able to clamp my lines on the tank petcock, too. It was extremely obnoxious to try and squeeze everything in there, but I somehow got it to work, and it's been working for a little over a year now. I'll see if I can snap a pic of my tank petcock in the morning, too. Just for shiggles.
You guys there is a lot I don't know. I have no problem admitting that.
This I do know.
What I linked above works. I have done it on 3 Gs's now, I have recommended it to many others and they have bought it and its worked.
Heres a pic of the clearances on my tank as of seconds ago:

Yes I use zip ties but there is room for clamps if you prefer.
I have worm clamps on mine.

Just a heads up.. 1/4 I.D was a real squeeze.. I literally had to force it on
Thus why I use 5/16
6MM=.236
7MM=.276
8MM=.315
The fitting is 8 MM after the barb (enlarged part). I checked my fuel line and the one that was replaced was 1/4 inch. I would prefer 7-7.5 MM but that is probably more expensive. It's a tight fit when you get the EFI reinforced hose, even 1/4 inch. I don't think it is a matter of right or wrong. You probably don't even need clamps with 1/4 inch, but it is harder to get on the barb. Personally I am a little leery of stretching the hose as far as it is in snake's picture, but most modern hose can handle it.

You do it dry? Try a little 2 cycle oil or similar slides on pretty quick.
Factory is 7 MM, .276 inch.
5/16 is .312, just a shade under the .315 of the 8 MM neck.
