Title: Math check on valve shim change
Post by: FreshGroundPepper on August 16, 2013, 09:34:47 PM
In an addendum to my other thread I want to quickly ask for some help checking the math on my new/old valve shims

ValveDesired clearanceCurrent clearanceCurrent shimshim size needed
right intake.08.05245240?
left intake.08.08245-
right exhaust.13<.04270260?
left exhaust.13.04268260?

Look good or am I missing something?

The desired clearance for both intake and exhaust is .03-.08mm, so both your intakes are within spec.

Technically, your exhausts might both be within spec, too.  I've heard some people say they run them on the higher side though, so the desired clearance for the exhausts would be .08

You should be able to get a 265 for the right exhaust, that would bring you to .08-09

Same for the left exhaust, which would bring you to .07

Nothing wrong with your math Pepper and your proposed shim changes would be OK if the right exhaust noted as <.04 has some minimal clearance now.  If you can turn the bucket/shim with your finger tip with the cam lobe turned away from the shim then your 2 shim smaller change to 260 would be OK, if it's tight and won't turn then you might want to go another size smaller depending on how tight it is.

The Suzuki spec of .03-.08mm is good for intake valves and I too wouldn't bother changing either of them, I haven't needed to change an intake valve in almost 175k miles of GS500 riding.

I set exhaust valves at .08-.13mm now and many others here are doing so too, the Suzuki .03-.08mm spec is too tight for long life of exhaust valves.  Your left exhaust would be OK with change to 265 as brendan suggests but change to 260 to give .12mm would be better I think, your choice.  I've set as wide as .005" (.13mm).

My valve check log:

The right exhaust valve on my 97 GS run at minimum clearance for many thousands of miles then required continuous shim changes until it was down to a minimum 215 shim before 80k miles.  When my 02 GS started the same pattern at 30-40k miles I went to the wider setting and bike went another 40k miles without a shim change.  I've worked with inches for over 6 decades now so I still do but can generally convert to mm in my head.   :icon_lol:

Thanks a ton guys! I just ordered my shims and hopefully they'll get here post-haste. Shipping from Indiana so hopefully by mid/late next week I'll be up and running again.

This. I ran ~.13 on my race bike with no issues. Megacycle cams recommends this clearance with their GS race cams as well.

Does anybody have recent experience with CycleRecyclePartII?

I ordered my new shims from there on Saturday but I have yet to hear anything about anything from them. It says they aren't open Sunday or Monday and while that's fine and all, there are other part stores that carry shims so if they say they're out or can't for whatever reason, I'll just cancel my order and go elsewhere.
Sorta in a hurry to get the bike fixed.
