Title: GS500 Cafe racer gauge change
Post by: 8ballbenny on August 18, 2013, 03:29:05 AM
Hi everyone,

First time poster, long time reader. Guys I'm getting a bit tired of looking around so I'm putting it out there.

I'm going to do a simple cafe racer / streetfighter build on my 2010 GS. I'm in South Australia.

Backstory: I bought her from an auction...smashed. There wasn't much to it (I'm a total noob), had the frame, disk and bars straightened, forks from a wreckers (also needed straightening) and she's good to go. Looks like she just left the shop.

The guys at Ellespede (QLD) have done a great little build which I'm sure your all familiar with http://www.ellaspede.com/bikes/007-2001-suzuki-gs500-2/

Missing from my inventory are the gauges. So... Dime City Cycles have a great little speedo which I think should plug right in. Correct me if I'm wrong!!!

But I can't find an adequate tachometer. I'm of the understanding that the GS has a 1:2 ratio. If that's correct then DCC don't have one (that runs out to 12000rpm), and no one else does!

Can anyone suggest a mini tachometer that reads 12000rpm with the GS ratio??

Once I sort the gauge out I can order and get it underway.

Thanks all, I look forward to hearing from you.

Hopefully somebody else has an answer about the ratio, but...... I've heard reports about the mini gauges from DCC failing after a couple thousand kilometers. Maybe they have been good lately, I dunno.

For the cost of gauges and shipping, it might be worth sending Jason & Hermes an email asking if the situation has been solved.

Edit: Sorry, got ahead of myself. Have you thought about going digital? Acewell, Koso, DanMoto, etc?

Thanks for the heads up Big Rich. I'll send that email.

I considered going digital but I decided to stick with the classic instruments to maintain the cafe (sort of) styling. Thanks again for the suggestion.

Cheers

What's wrong with fabbing a new mount for the OEM clocks?. Something curvier, that mounts the clocks a little offset with speedo at the center and tachometer at its 2 o'clock.

:dunno_black:

There are ways to spend quite a bit of change if you are so inclined. Motogadget has lots of options. Quality is top notch, but they are effing expensive:

SPA Technique are half a step behind Motogadget, but they do look great and are still 40% cheaper than Motogadget:

There's Acewell. They look pretty good and are much more affordable:

Just thought about it, you could get some gauges from pretty much any Suzuki and the ratios "should" be the same. SV650, GSXR, etc..

... errr... 1:2 Ratio ... for the older mechanical tachs perhaps?.... how the heck does a electronic tach have a ratio?
