Title: Rattle Can Clear Coat Suggestions
Post by: 25knots on August 23, 2013, 07:06:36 AM
So I've rattle can painted my bike twice now, using two different brands of paint and clear coat, both supposedly designed for motor vehicles.  In each case, however, I've had gas stain and bubble the pain on the tank when it comes into contact with gasoline.

So, does anyone have a suggestion for a rattle can clear coat that is actually gasoline resistant? What experience have you had with it? Do you have any advice on application and curing?

I think you are going to be hard pressed to find any coating that is gasoline resistant in a can.

Most urethane, or epoxy based paints/clear coats would do well, however they come in two parts and must be mixed prior to application.

I am no painter, so I am curious to see what someone more versed in the art has to say.  O0

2k clear. Drop gas on it all day and just wipe it right off. Just like a factory paint Job. Not to mention it looks amazing and is easy to work with.

Thanks guys.  I'd actually heard good things about 2k Clear but didn't want to bias answers one way or another by mentioning it.  I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes.

I'm another fan of Spraymax 2K Clear. I used it on my GS850 tank with great results.

Bare steel:

Duplicolor Metalcast (with no primer - notice how "dull" it looks) :

And with Spraymax on top:

The orange peel in the last pic is my fault, and the tank steel needs cut and buffed.
