Title: SHAD side case install
Post by: guitarsense on August 30, 2013, 08:53:41 PM
Has anyone installed the SHAD sidecase kit?  I have an issue with getting the mounts on.  On the side with the exhaust I am unable to fit the bracket into the foot peg.  The directions that come with the side case kit show a different type of bracket on the mount and the pegs look different.  It seems that the directions are for an 2001 GS500F.  Did the pegs change from 2001 to 2007.  I have emailed the SHAD representatives here in the US but they are not very responsive.  Here is a link to the kit

Would love to hear from anyone that has installed this on their GS

The frame from 2001 to present is the same.

Thanks for the info.  I guess I am going to have to figure it out with the dealer.

Maybe provide pictures of the different mounts?

Your link leads to a link for side fittings that's marked GS500F 01-11 so although the PDF directions are marked for 01 it looks like they are intended for all years 01-11 which are all the same.  Yes the PDF picture of the peg and bracket doesn't look right, the peg is actually carried by lugs that are part of the frame but it looks like the forward arm of the side bracket is coming in at an angle that would fit underneath the peg and lugs and bolt in place if it reaches there.  Have you actually tried to fit in on or are you just looking at the PDF pics.  The peg and bracket could be just a bit of artistic approximation, there is stuff worse than that on the drawings in the parts fiches.

Thanks for taking the time to look at this.  I have attached a picture of the side frame.  You will notice how it is completely different from the one shown in the installation directions and does not align with the peg bracket

Your picture is helpful  and hopeful I think, you mentioned in your first post that bracket doesn't fit on right (muffler) side leaving me to assume it does fit on the left side and is perhaps already tightened down there also?

That's the kind of assembly job that I'd leave all the bolts loose until I got all of them started and can see if there is enough free play in the loose assembly to get the last holes into alignment and the last bolt started.  If you can get them all started then tighten the forward (peg) bolts first and draw down the bolts on the top in the u piece that attaches to the frame member where the passenger grab handle is last.  I think you'll find that rather flimsy frame member will yield to the tightening if necessary.

I mounted a lightweight Givi monolock top case on a no longer made Suzuki luggage rack and was told it was bouncing up and down by friend behind me.  Turns out that flimsy frame member was cracking allowing it to bounce so I added some rear bracing and 9 years and 90k miles later it's still solid as a rock and the frame member hasn't cracked any further:
