Title: Buy out totaled bike for $390?
Post by: jreidg3 on September 04, 2013, 12:16:53 PM
Hi Guys,
I am looking for some feedback. The insurance company totaled out my 1999 GS500E with 16K miles. The buyout is $390. The exhaust is bent and the rear wheel is out of alignment. Is it worth the headache to part it out or just let it go, take the check and get another bike?

Are you saying it will cost you $390 to buy it back from the insurance company? or that is how much the insurance company is giving you?!

I would say it depends how much the insurance company is going to give you, but $390 seems a little high if that's the buy back amount...  If they give you enough to get another bike that is as good or better than what you had, then don't get greedy, and just take the check.  If they don't give you enough for that, then consider the buy back.

$390 is the buy-back price. The insurance company gave me $2950 for the bike. I am thinking ill just let them take it.

If room to store it is available, I would do it! You know the damage and the how it ran before. You can easily get another gs for $2500 and have a complete parts bike to part out or keep for spares.

I would think along those lines too... you have quite a bit to work with there at $2950... as we all know here that a good engine is worth that price of $390... but it would not be worth it if you don't have the room or time.

buy it back, if you really feel you cant fix it (which shouldnt be hard to do if your heart is in it, but imposable if your heart isnt)  you should be able to make that back plus alittle in parting it out to the folks here, helping out others who need parts too.

Where are you!? Depending on where you are, I might buy it from you! I have the parts to fix the rear...assuming it's not the actual wheel.

The engine alone is worth $500. Forks are worth $200 if they are straight. Carbs are worth $50-$100. Tank is worth $200.

I'd buy it back.
