Title: Be careful changing your oil
Post by: 007brendan on September 08, 2013, 04:46:51 PM
My wife asked me to change the oil on her car.  I've changed the oil on all the cars I've owned over the years, but this was the first time changing in on her Corolla.  So I jack it up a bit and throw in the jack stands.  I reach under and loosen the drain plug, unscrew it by hand and scoot back out from under the car as it's draining.  I go to clean off my hand and realize I just drained the transmission fluid!!  So, another trip to autozone and $40 of ATF later, I'm finally able to change the oil for real this time.  I'm trying to justify it by saying she needed it changed anyway.  So anyway, heads up to be careful if you're ever changing oil on a different car for the first time.

Been there, done that. :D Pulled the drain plug, and I immediately smell the distinct scent of 75W-90 gear oil. Well....sh1t.

Are your previous cars all rear wheel drive? I can see how you could have mistaken the gearbox and motor drain-plugs on a corolla as the gearbox and engine are both in the front.

I've had a rwd ranger for the past 10 years.  I had a 4wd pathfinder for a while before that.  I did have a fwd sable wagon at one point, but that was a long while ago.

No worse than what I did last week. Like you, been doing all my own work for years. The mother in law needed engine oil changed and trans. So I bought everything, oil and filters.

I drained everything and put new engine oil and trans oil filters on. I put the engine oil in and then put the funnel on the dipstick tube (you see where I'm going with this right?) and dropped 8 qrts down the tube. Crank it up and let everything get circulated and put it in gear. Hmm..... Trans doesn't go in gear. Well let me check the oil levels..... Oh...... That's why. There is no oil in the trans. So I had to drain everything again. But all new oils..... again and do it all over. Pissed to say the least
