Title: NEW tire, Rotor.........Used Tire, wheel and Rotor
Post by: robfriedenberger on September 13, 2013, 02:00:15 PM
Hey guys,

So since I got my bike a week or 2 ago....memory is going at the age of 21...... but ways, I need a new back tire for my bike to pass inspection....expired.....and the PO let the pads get so low that now the rotor is all jacked up so both of them need replaced.....I've been searching around and I found a few complete used rear wheels with tires for less than the cost of a new bt-45.....So what I am getting at is would it be worth it?  Heres the obvious things that could go wrong.

Rim could be damaged
Tire could be damaged / roted
Rotor could be worse
Sprocket could be damaged

So i found a few on E-bay the other day for around $90 and also i found one on CL for $100, What would you guys do?
As any one who has bough any thing "brand new" in the last 10 years Know's, new stuff can be worse than the old stuff...

Are you planning on getting rid of your wheel?  As long as the tire is good you can just swap it onto your wheel.  I would expect shipping an entire wheel / tire assembly would negate any savings you'd get from buying a used tire.

saving money on a rear tire an what have you isnt worth the problems you might have. when it comes to things like this i choose to buy new. i enjoy my life too much to lose it over being cheap. dont get me wrong tho im a real cheap ass just not when it comes to safety.

put it this way.... you ask any cage driver what tires are on their vehicle, 80% wont be able to tell you. ask a biker what tires they have and they know....

it is very important to get good tires on a bike. your life depends on them.

You don't know what condition its in, what abuse it may have seen or if its been subject to poor quality repairs  :dunno_black:

Don't do it.

Mmmmm ... Unless you can eyeball it first ... even with some reasonable photos online ..then I would be a bit hesitant of buying someone's 'awesome' used tyre or wheel ..

If there is a used one that's close enough for you to go see . Then fine! .. You can decide on the spot ... You just risk paying your scarce $$ on something that 'could be crap' .... Better to wait and save a few extra dollars to get stuff you can see first or buy new ... And do the work yourself .. Good learning experience too!

New tire and a like new used rotor from e-bay would be the way I'd go.  Be sure to check the date of manufacture of that used tire if you go that way.

haha I figured I'd get some input, I've had 2 tubes pop on my old bike so i know all to well how scary it can be when it go's. I decided to order a new tire, and just go with a used rotor and go from there, dose any one know the spec for the rotors by chance? I might want to see if my old rotor is able to be milled

I haven't heard of milling a bike rotor. My dealer said they never do that.
Stamped on the rotor will be a minimum thickness. Use a thickness calipers (the C clamp type) to get in and measure the thinnest spot.
Regular calipers will measure the thickest part - which usually is the inner and outer rims.

Something cheap like this works great
