Title: Anybody have their front wheel off? Measurement please.......
Post by: Big Rich on September 15, 2013, 07:38:47 PM
Just wondering if anybody has their wheel off and could measure the distance between the fork legs for me. No spacers or anything like that, but the distance between where the axle fits.

Thanks in advance!

Bugger! I just refitted my wheel this morning. But I made a little jig to check that my forks weren't being distorted after I fitted the wheel. It measures 193.75mm between the sliders measured just above the disc.

Measure center to center the holes on a triple.
Then measure the thickness of the lower part of the forks and subtract 1/2 that thickness to get the inside dimension for the wheel+spacer+speedo-thingy.

Do remember the right fork has the bearing sleeve that floats until you tighten everything up to allow for varying distances between forks and varying thickness of wheel and other stuff on the front axle.

I don't have the stock bearing spacers but this is the stack up bearing face to bearing face:89mm

Add your left/right spacer lengths.

Good info gents, thank you. The reason I ask is I'm considering using GS500 wheels on my GS450. Right now I have a GS650 front end mounted, and might end up with a GS850 front end (all spare parts laying around). I could use a complete GS500 front end, but don't want to change out my instrument cluster and ignition.

Sorry, (Jeez I talk crap sometimes!!!) that measurement between sliders should read: 140mm. Hope it didn't mislead you.

Found my notes on this: between sliders measured between flats inside spindle holes, mine measures 155.5mm (GS500E)

Oh, crap. I just got in 2 complete front ends. I'll go measure the distance between the forks.
I'll even take a picture!

Better....
Camera was long zoom about 7 to 8 feet above it, point straight down at it.
You should be able to take all measurements from it. If you need something more precise, let me know.

Awesome!

That's perfect Adidas. You and Jools - thanks a million. Just found out I'll only be working 8 hour shifts the next couple days instead of 12 hour shifts. Maybe I'll have time to accomplish something! :)
