Been back on GStwins a few too many times lately and met up with a few members so I thought I might share my TLR build with y'all! For those of you unfamiliar with the TLR, it was the second best bike Suzuki ever built ;)
I've been a massive fan of the TLR since my best mate showed up on one. We bought a TLR with a busted motor and rebuilt it as a streetfighter for another friend. Since then it has changed hands twice and now it sits in my garage awaiting the day I get my license back... except this time it will be built the way I want it to be built.
It started out like this
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh253/teknoblast/TL1000R/SDC13006.jpg) (http://s258.photobucket.com/user/teknoblast/media/TL1000R/SDC13006.jpg.html)
The it looked like this
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh253/teknoblast/TL1000R/SDC13023.jpg) (http://s258.photobucket.com/user/teknoblast/media/TL1000R/SDC13023.jpg.html)
Now it looks like this
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh253/teknoblast/TL1000R/DSC_0291.jpg) (http://s258.photobucket.com/user/teknoblast/media/TL1000R/DSC_0291.jpg.html)
Frame, swingarm and a host of other parts are at the powder coater and anodizer and all the exposed nuts & bolts are ready for the electroplater. I've got another 4 months before I can ride it so the rebuild will be slow and meticulous. New shock, rearsets have already arrived as has full bearing set for the front & rear suspension is in transit.
Stay tuned for more
:thumb: ... Wish I had a like button!! :D
Edit ... Oh and I don't think it's possible to be back on this board 'too many times' .. Wash your mouth out young man! :icon_lol:
Love a good and complete tear down
Now I see what you mean!
Got to love a tiller of the non dirt variety :)
Stopped by the powdercoaters on Tuesady and they are clearly f%$king me around - even though their shop compressor broke down they have a couple of small compressors going so work doesnt stop... but a week after they received the parts they hadn't even started. I gave them a small ripping and dropped by this morning - all parts are primed and ready to bake prior to the top coat.
While I was there though, the bike frame dropped off their painting rack about 5 feet to the ground. It was excellent display of self control on my part not to go completely mental. They are going to re-coat it but nevertheless the frame now has a dent grrr!
Im happy with the anodizing though!

:icon_eek: they gonna deal with the actual dent? ... friggin muppets!!!!
We'll see... i walked out of there in disgust so they know i was pissed about it. I hope they don't expect to get paid for parts they damaged
Nothing sh*ts me more than dropping your bike off to get it fixed, and it comes back in worse condition than when you dropped it off.. makes me wanna stick a boot in their ring!
That's unbelievable?!?!
Parts finally finished by the powder coater... but still required several hours of wet & dry action to remove all of the overspray and runs. Preparation is the key here and unfortunately there was not enough. Nonetheless the surfaces that are painted feel fantastic - like ceramic. All of the large parts and wheels should be back later this arvo... better go buy some more sandpaper

:icon_confused: :cookoo: .. having to rub back items done by a 'professional' ... "priceless" :icon_rolleyes: :icon_lol:
I hope you get a discount on the work.
I just took the triple clamp back so they could coat it again - they put the hook thru the key barrell hole and it marked the finish.
Started discussing final $$$ and yes they will be giving me a discount
With the benefit of hindsight, I would not choose to powder coat again.
I'm not sure if its just the dude who sprayed my parts, but holy batfuck the coating is so thick that it has to be scraped, buffed and sanded off every single mounting face and under every bolt head and every single thread has to be chased. I've been in the garage all afternoon and evening prepping all of these parts and I'm nowhere near being finished... it all started with the rear sprocket not fitting onto the cush-drive and it spiraled out of control!
Next time I will just wave a few coats of good quality engine enamel on the parts and have them baked!
Ill be goin powdercoat IF facility can match the maserati charcoal grey finish. if not ive a local facility ill have paint it. i furnish paint, and materials they furnish equip. to do job. unsane, how was it you found these folks? recommendation?, or? took a stab at it?
Internet search Yama - they were local, had government and military contracts and had a good reputation

That's oddusually ones that have a decent rep like that don't goof off. heres hoping whomever was at fault is no longer there Eh?understand making mistakes. but the trouble you described sounds like sloppiness on their part. am dreading the stripdown of the pig when it comes time. thinking ill go paint tbh. cause that colour does not exist in powdercoat. although powdercoat is far more durable
Yeah I thought the powder would be more durable but it chips extremely easily - just washing the parts in my sink I chipped the cushion drive!
Apparently the finish is so hard after curing that it becomes brittle. Not good for painting anything that cops stones or need to flex a bit.
I found this out after going ahead with the coating :cookoo:
errr... its been ages since ive spoken to a mate about this issue... he had a 1960-something valiant with a big block all done up... had the axles and tailshaft plus other bits under there powder coated... and found the chipping problem also... pissed him off no end .. also....
he ended up getting a rubbery type clear coat with a satin type finish sprayed onto the bits .. i dunno what it was exactly... but it wasnt a car type product ... more a pool sealer or similar? .. it did take some of the chipping problem away.. not fantastic .. but improved slightly.. :icon_neutral:
might be more of a pain in the ass though... :dunno_black:
... thing is also... it might have been handy for the powder coater mob to think a bit and mention it... but then they would have missed all your dollars.. :icon_rolleyes:
The rest of the parts showed up this arvo but the wheels were sent back - asked for dark bronze in satin... got matte gold instead. F&%king muppets :dunno_black:
Finish looks good but I'm sure there is at least 5-8 hours of prep before they can be reassembled!

That almost looks like the metallic charcoal im planning on my build over winter perhaps.
Quick update - all of the powder coated parts are being returned to be stripped and my $$$ refunded. They coated absolutely everything (except some bolt threads) with a super thick layer and so after almost 30 hours of scraping the coating off with a dremel and razor blade I'd had enough. Credit to them for accepting their mistakes and putting customer service first. No more rebuild pics till all parts get painted properly!
My god, what a royal PITA. Glad they accepted their faults and are gonna correct them though.
Ditto!!
While i was an MMI student in AZ, i was also a guard at a bank on 43rd and van buren. anyhoo, bank mgr had a tiller 1000, running like shiite, i advised him what to do, he declined, next evening, he cranks on it, and i see fire come out at the manifold ( exhaust) and death rattles thereafter. told him well sir, imho costs just went up significantly. what im saying is, take your time with this, do it right, and do not cut any corners. shell last you a good while :)
Just spotted a Repairable Write Off TLR ...
http://www.manheim.com.au/recreation/3906507/
Parts still not returned from the painters?
The parts are back from the powdercoaters all bare and stripped - Bought some Prepsol, masking tape, scalpel, fresh box of razor blades and a bag of rags last week so I will be getting started soon!
Just found myself a good woman so she is.... distracting me
She's into bikes and melts at the sound of a hot twin so I will have my hands full for a while juggling the two of them
Looks good Rod - you should buy it!

Powdercoating has to be 1/2 mm thick ... less and it wont protect, more and I am not sure, maybe it will come off. But This is aluminum, so I guess they could be thinner ... I have plenty of stuff powdercoated, I actually dont care the threads need to be cleaned, its a lot easier than you think ... Get ss bolts, get em in come penetrating oil and it will be fine.
Cool.
Buddha.

There was a small section that was taped off to protect the bearings from sandblasting... peeled the tape off and measured the thickness of the coating @ 2.35mm
I then proceeded to tap the leftover coating with a small 3/8" extention and chipped it all away easily - now you see why I was so unhappy with the result

 ... wait ... what?! ...
.. i think i was just had a go at!?!? .. :D :flipoff:
Quick update - a little progress with the bike... lots of taping. Almost prepped and should be shooting the paint within the next week.
I've also picked up some wiring harnesses - they've been stripped, cleaned, repaired, modified (yes there are mods for these bikes too) and totally re-bound. Looks nice
There have been a swag of deliveries though:
- Ohlins steering damper
- Kaneng Billet rearsets
- Vortex billet gas cap
- M4 Retro Hayabusa Mufflers (to be adapted)
- New ignition barrell and some sexy Suzuki keys
- Full fairing package
- Gold linked EK chain with +1/-1 Sprockets
- New mirrors with integrated indicators
Let the great reassembly commence!
All parts are away with the painter now so the final wait has begun prior to assembly. In the mean time I thought I'd make some non-genuine Suzuki SST's of my own
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh253/teknoblast/TL1000R/SDC13127.jpg)
The engine, calipers and assorted bits await the Soda Blaster man - coming tomorrow hopefully
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh253/teknoblast/TL1000R/SDC13133.jpg)
Gotta have it all done before Christmas or a chain of events will be triggered that may bring about the end of days
Alright the chassis parts are all back after fresh Satin Black paint - after the phuck around with the powdercoaters I decided to prep them myself and Im stoked with the results!
The sodablaster guy came and blasted the engine, strut ends, brakes and some assorted bits & pieces... making the biggest mess in the process. I would not reccommend this unless you have a decent outdoor area thats well ventilated!!! I expected he'd rock up with a little compressor and make a small mess but NO he had a massive industrial trailer compressor that idled at 200db and flooded my entire carpark with bicarb. It took me 3 hours to clean up! ANyways after he'd finished the v-twin came up like this
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh253/teknoblast/TL1000R/SDC13136.jpg)
4 coats of VHT "Cast Iron" engine enamel later and she was looking good!
Throttles and ancillaries on and ready to bolt into the frame
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh253/teknoblast/TL1000R/SDC13144.jpg)
Engine in and steering stem (with new bearings) in - the home made Suzuki SST sockets worked a treat!
Wow that engine came up like new!
More progress for today...
Head stem, brakes, shocks and assorted bits & pieces sprayed in Satin Black as well
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh253/teknoblast/TL1000R/SDC13241.jpg)
Rear rotary damper & spring replaced with a Hyperpro shock FTW
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh253/teknoblast/TL1000R/SDC13238.jpg)
New Renthal grips were a total bastard to fit without compressed air but I got them on and they're rock solid! All switch contacts cleaned up and lubed ready for action
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh253/teknoblast/TL1000R/SDC13247.jpg)
It's looking great Cam, are you going to get some billet reservoirs?
To be honest I'd rather get some brand new OE reservoirs... I haven't seen any aftermarket ones that fit properly or look nice!
DAMN! Top notch work with crazy attention to the little details. Looking great!
Your choices seem pretty top shelf so far, so I'm sure you know what you're doing!

Or a couple of these??? :D
(http://motocyco.biz/shop/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/ano_grenade1_hi.jpg)
Oh I vote for the grenade ones!!
Lol the fairings I bought came with hand grenade valve caps as a "free gift".... Let me know if you want them and they can be my free gift to you ;)
At this stage I wouldn't care if the reservoirs were McDonald's sundae cups as long as its done by the 24th!!! 18 months is a long time sitting on the bench!
Maybe the black anodized ones... I want the bike to look like it's on steroids but stock if you catch my drift
I reckon the silver ones look pretty cool. Black flies under the radar a little more though i guess.
One more vote for the black ones.
Quick update - all wiring installed and fuel tank plumbed up, a couple of primes on the fuel pump and it fired to life :thumb:
So good to hear it thumping again and very satisfying to know that after everything was stripped, repaired, replaced and renewed - it lives again!
Just waiting on wheels and tail frame to return from the painters so I can finish it off!
:icon_twisted: ... That would have sounded AWESOME in that underground garage bro!! :icon_twisted:
Great news, will be keen to see this on the road.

I hope you are up for some cruising soon Rod!
Just waiting on wheels, rear seat frame and fuel tank to return from the painters so everything else is virtually finished! The speedo perspex was cracked so after 3 hours shaping new faces its finished... what a mission! Will be wrapping the exhaust next week and final assembly!

Definitely up for a cruise. It looks awesome in white, really striking.
Note to self - wear gloves and protective clothing next time - skin very itchy :icon_rolleyes:
err ... Unsane mate .... Wheel the bike outside the garage before you fire it up the first time with that wrap on .... It'll probably smoke like a bastard for 5-10 mins!!! :thumb:
That is on the headers yeah? ... If not then don't worry
ugh...I miss my TL1000S so much...
Unsane...what are you doing for wheels? I've just sorted out everything needed to fit R1/6 wheels to a K1 GSXR1000...should be an identical setup for the tiller.
Thanks janx I will be sure to do that... This stuff is hazardous enough without fumes to boot!
As for wheels, have the stock wheels painted in a satin bronze... Should have them back tonight!
Ran into big dramas when it came time to fit the exhaust - the pipes are a slip-on kit for current model Hayabusa (I love these M4 retro pipes but they just didn't make one to fit my bike) so after many hours of cutting and grinding, going back to the drawing board twice, they now fit perfectly. I had to use rear peg mounts from a TL1000S with a small adapter but it looks factory now!
After fitting the rear end I decided to make a lining for the storage compartment - its quite massive inside there... I reckon you could fit at least 10 cans of beer in there!
Getting close now! Where are the wheels though?
The wheels were here...
but now they're here...

So after 3 months of furious work the bike is registered and running perfectly. The spraypainter couldn't get the tank and hump painted white for me so they remain red for the time being - there are mixed opinions on leaving the tank red but I think I'll paint it!
After 18 months on the sideline, words cant express the joy this bike has given me in the last 2 days
Only crappy phone pics at the moment - my girl has an awesome SLR so some better pics will come
Looooooks so nice.
Thanks Golly - looks nice, the sound is a v-twin symphony and while 135hp isn't in the realms of today's super bikes, it has some serious torque and the front wheel lifts very easily
Very cool man, looks like it all paid off. Congrats. :)

Hahaha - the Mrs keeps sliding forward as she has long legs and they aren't a good fit for the pegs. We've tried a few changes but it's just a supersport... Not a tourer!
Will be staying with Suzuki though... We are both pretty comfy on the Hayabusa ;)
Special price for GStwins members!!!
Or... keep the TLR and then buy a hayabusa as well!? :icon_twisted:
