Title: 2001 GS500E Leaking Right side carb...
Post by: Tonyp884 on September 18, 2013, 03:50:26 AM
I have a problem suddenly with a fuel leak. The right hand (brake side) carb appears to be leaking around the float bowl gasket, I think. I bought the bike a month ago with 4,9xx original miles on it and have put 1,800 miles on it with few issues. I am sure the carbs have never been worked on. And aside from the issue with lean cold start the bike runs GREAT. I started smelling feul a couple days ago. I replaced fuel lines and checked for leaks. But last nigh I found a dampness around the float bowl. I tightened the four screws. This morning I had a much larger leak. I have ordered a 2004 bowl gasket from bike bandit. I hate to wait for the part to arrive, cause this is my daily ride to work 45 miles round trip. But, I can't imagine that any of the gaskets material stuff in my tool box will fix this leak. Anyone dealt with this yet?
Thanks ,
Tony P

Are you talking like RTV silicone? MOst of those get absolutely eaten up by gasoline. Firsthand knowledge, was in a bind  :2guns:

I wouldn't ride it like that. If that gasket is starting to go, it could just "pop." Mine did one day, was all good, then suddenly I'm smelling gas, and see it dripping a lot out of the gasket area, right on to the hot motor

Have you taken off the bowl and inspected the gasket? Most likely not, but maybe it's a piece of crud or crease.  Either way, I wouldn't ride it until it's solved and fixed. You don't to be Evil Knievel going down the street on fire.
