Title: Gs500f misfire
Post by: Countrymud95 on September 20, 2013, 03:23:26 PM
Riding my gs500f 20 mins in its starts to drop 500-1500 rpm and loose power it only stops at 5000 rpm then does it again once past that ive had carb cleaned and lines all checked. If you stop for a stop sign it shuts off. Alway run premium gas. Anyone know what the problem is?

Regular gas is what it is made for so save money and just use regular. (There are threads about wasting money on premium)

I have seen the timing pickups start to flake out when they get hot. A way to see if that is it could be to rude with the timing cover off or, preferably, put washers under the bolts so there is 1/4" space around it so air will flow through the timing pickup area. Do one ride like one where you experience the bike starting to die. If it doesn't die when the timing pickup has lots of air flowing past it to keep it cooler then replace the timing pick up.

Other possibilities could be heat related to the ignition unit heating up, coils going bad when hot or most anything else. Most partz get air flow to control heat however the timing pickup is under the cover with no air flow so it can get hot.

You might look under the tank  at the wires and see if any are touching the engine - hot wires might be starting to short out.

Suggestions and hope this helps.

Oh, one other thing would be fuel starvation. When it starts to die, open the gas cap and ride with it open to let air into the tank. Gravity fed fuel system needs air getting in the tank to let gas out. After riding, if the tank vent is clogged, you can get a partial vacuum that prevents fuel from freely flowing out.
