Title: So I prolly need a new top end...
Post by: mr. happy on September 21, 2013, 10:01:04 PM
I'm in Burlington, VT.   I rode about 35 miles in the rain without the air filter seated totally on the carbs.  Now we're burning oil, the left cylinder barely hits super rough and the right cyclinder won't hit at all.  I gotta imagine dirt from the road scratched the bejeezus out of my cylinder walls.

Who knows if it backfired off, or I screwed up on putting everything back together... it is what it is now.  :icon_confused:

Anyone have anything out there?

Do a leak down and check the compression before you get to crazy and tear it down.  Could be an ignition issue from being in the rain.

Yea ... new top end ... probably not.
You've probably got water clogging up all your carb passages, and yo uwant to get the motor dry asap . .though the heat would have done a good job if it was warmed up fine before the ride.

Cool.

Could try a carb cleaning ( thorough) and an oil change. or put it near a space heater ( safely) to try and dry her off

I love it when someone posts something grave, and people post solutions ... and we never see what happened ...

Cool.

Sorry bout that. My access to the internet is very spotty.  I usually consult it once or twice every few weeks.

The GS is still sitting, i came into an 82 honda xl I've been spending my wrenching time on.
The oil burning is unexplained if water is my only problem, no?

Burning oil is bad, but I wont conclude your cylinder is toast yet ...
Dry everything, clean it and re assemble it and try it. You may ahve a hose that is loose or some other problem ...

Cool.
