Title: Please Don't Hate-Wheelie Cons
Post by: Tallemertes on September 22, 2013, 08:24:50 PM
So I popped my first wheelie tonight  :woohoo: But thats gotta be hard on the bike. What will wheelies wear out first? I'm not talking balance point wheelies but the occasional pop the clutch and get a foot or two off the ground. Will your clutch get destroyed? Does it wear the sprockets faster? Will it cause the shocks to leak?

Not a full on wheelie, but rather a bunny hop  :tongue2:

Probably the chain and sprockets will wear sooner than the clutch

Wheelies are clutch killers, especially on these overweight pigs.....The cush drive will save the sprockets some wear and tear though.

this ..

and this .. (though these lads are not right in the head!)

and this ..

all the above are bad!!  :nono:

however! .. learning on a dirtbike .. as this guy explains... might be good!

i didnt learn from this particular video ... and i'm still a crappy wheelie popper   :icon_rolleyes: ... i had a dirtbike that i took out onto a nice 'soft' ploughed field ... and started my practicing there! .. getting the balance and power and nice soft touchdowns is the key!! .. sustaining the balance is the tricky bit ..  .. i'm good for almost 10m at 40km/h!!  :icon_rolleyes: .. then i woosy out usually ..  ;)

but yeah .. some old dunger dirtbike ... nice soft grassy or ploughed field... .get your basic technique sorted ...

just sayin  ;) :thumb:

ok, here it is  as a list, anyone that tells you otherwise is lying or really does not understand cumulative damage.

Wheelies destroy/wear out the following for one or more and or combined reasons

Clutch plates, clutch baskets with their bushings,
chains,
sprockets front and rear (along with cush drives)
wheel bearings
headstock bearings,
shocks....front and rear
shock mounts links and bushings
swingarm bushings, swing arm axle adjustment holes (they collapse)
transmission and counter shaft bearings
and yes crank / counter bal shaft bearings

between beating the hell out of alot of shaZam! at once, overheating, and even oil depriving/cavitation it wont be the rattling of parts that gets your attention on landing but suddenly realizing something isnt sitting right or the engine pukes vital organs

stunting is fun, wheelies, endos etc. but it will kill a bike from the inside, from under the paint before you see it.

I have never had any trouble doing wheelies on a dirt bike or supermoto. I can keep the wheel up for quite a while but give me a supersport and I WILL crash it. Dont know why this is but meh :dunno_black:
