Title: rattling noise when decelerating
Post by: ghand on September 23, 2013, 02:03:36 PM
Hi guys,

I've recently come into some kind of problem on my 2008 GS500. As the subject says, it's some kind of rattling noise that occurs only when I'm decelerating, regardless of engine speed. It doesn't seem to affect my handling or riding in any way, but it is some kind of loud! The rattle seems to be towards the front of the bike and goes away when pulling the clutch or sitting at idle - really hope it isn't the transmission. I've got about 14,000 miles currently. I have no idea what this could be, hopefully one of you guys can help shed some light on this!

#1 to check is loose chain.

Thanks for your input. How will I know if the chain has been tightened properly?

All the books, owner's manuals,  and even the WIKI have the info.

Here it is.....

Thanks, will try this when I get home. I looked over the how-to and maintenance pages and didn't see anything, didn't think about trying the wiki!

While the chain may not be the cause, it is a very likely cause. Since checking the chain is easy, do it. If that fixed it then great! If not, at least your chain is properly adjusted and we know that is not the cause.

Also lube the chain while you're at it.

You could have a worn front sprocket and the noise is caused by the hooked teeth releasing the chain when coasting.  Loose chain makes noise worse.
