Title: Oil Leak from under sprocket cover? Cant find the source!
Post by: jeffreywenzel on September 27, 2013, 10:23:22 PM
I am having a problem with my 2010 GS500F. After a ride the outside of the sprocket cover is coated in engine oil. The oil pools on top of the engine and flings on the frame as well. I cleaned under the sprocket, and took it for a ride. The only place I can see oil coming from is circled in the picture. There is a small buildup of oil under the black plastic that is held on by 2 philips screws. Any ideas if this place could be the leak?

1. Clean the engine SPOTLESS
2. Let it dry
3. Give it a good dusting of baby powder

The source of the leak will be self evident.

What you circled is the neutral switch. There is no oil pressure behind it (the transmission is there and oil is not under pressure). Any leak there would be very minor and would not end up on top of the sprocket cover.

Most likely you have a leak from the magneto/stator cover which is in front of the sprocket cover.  Do the procedure. You will find the source of the leak and  your bike will be as fresh as a baby's behind.

Either your sprocket seal, gear change seal or stator cover gasket

I'm having the same Problem. I'm getting oil leaking from sprocket cover area to the frame and all the way down to the kick stand. Im just about to take apart my sprocket cover & give it a good clean to see what is going in. The baby powder is a brilliant idea too.

Did you find out where the leak was coming from?

Could just be excess chain lube leaking out.

I am confident that this problem is chain lube

I will consider it being chain lube but ... I have a lot of build up so much that after each ride the bike leaves oil spots on the ground.

I also have the front bottom fairing which is building up a lot of build up like when dirt sticks to oil.

Had this problem with my bike. Oil pooled in the exact same spot, went through the same process of cleaning the sprocket cover out and still leaked. Turned out to be a failed stator cover gasket as mentioned before.

I am searching for the part # on the stator cover gasket but cannot locate. Would you know or remember it by any chance? I'm using this site diagram to search for it: (http://www.alpha-sports.com/suzuki_parts.htm?q=suzuki-bike-parts)

I did manage to fix it, it turned out to be the Magneto Cover Gasket. Be careful when replacing it, the old one is a bugger to get off. I used some gasket remover, and didn't realize it strips paint, so the paint on the cover is in nasty shape now. Nothing a little high temp paint doesn't fix though. Nothing but problems with this bike. Decided to do a valve check while the bike was apart since the bike was idling so horribly. Looks like the previous owner never did one, the right exhaust valve had absolutely no clearance at all. Waiting for a new shim to come in and hopefully thats the last of the problems.
