Title: 2006F Valve clearance check
Post by: Rexsk8er on October 06, 2013, 12:00:21 PM
Hi, Im doing my first  valve clearance check on my 2006 GS500.I am going by the video that baltimore gs made,in the video he says line up the RT mark with the pickup, but he does not give a close up shot, is this the correct position for checking valves.

I understand that you check 3 valves with the cam notches towards each other and the forth valve with the cam notches away from each other,I just was not sure of the correct alignment of the RT marks. Thanks for your help!

Your a tad off but it's close enough, above diagrams are from Shop Manual.  Got a close up of my 02 on the TDC mark but it's the older 2 coil pick up type.

Thank you so much for the quick reply, mine has two marks, when you say im a tad off should I center one of the marks with the pickup or center the pickup between the two marks? checking the the clearance in this position both exhaust valves are at 0.09mm and right intake is at 0.04 and the left intake is tight a 0.03mm will not fit but the bucket will turn freely. everyone says run the exhaust valves a tad loose so should i just leave them alone and only change the shims in the intakes? Thanks jack im eric by the way!

I said you were a tad off but it is close enough, not really all that important.  I check valves setting close to TDC like the book says but others just set each cam lobe away from the bucket/shim and measure.  I found a small maybe .001" difference between the methods but others have checked both ways and claimed they were the same.

The .09mm for exhaust valves is good and I'd go with that, if I changed it I'd make it wider not tighter.  I set exhaust valves at .08-.13 mm now as many others do.  The Suzuki .03-.08mm spec is just too tight for long exhaust valve life.

I found intake valves change very little if any and leave them at .03-.08mm Suzuki spec.  If the bucket can be turned with the finger tip I wouldn't worry about it, can't really measure below the spec anyway.

My valve check record for 180k GS miles, my 02 GS just turned 100k. I work in inches not mm:
