Title: Bike dropped - no damage - what should I inspect?
Post by: GS500F2004 on October 07, 2013, 08:56:29 PM
Pretty silly really. I was trying to teach my younger brother how to ride, in the driveway. I was also on the bike.

I've shown him before, but this time he put a bit too much pressure when he was getting on and it got me by surprise and the bike fell on the kick-stand side. I was very upset at my incompetence by not realising I could have avoided it by just putting down the kick-stand as he was getting on.

I picked it back up and was surprised to see there was no damage! From what I could tell there was some minor scratches on the LHS mirror plastic but they were there from before. The bar-ends seem to have got some minor scratches, but I think they were there from before. There were no cracks to the fairings or any damage to the indicator lights. The gear lever was fine. The foot peg rubber has a minor tear but it's not really visible and was possible from before too. The engine cover is fine, no damage.

I was truly surprised, started up the bike and it ran fine. As it was coming down and since I was still on it I think it hit my legs on the way and therefore slowed down before it hit the ground. I'm just wondering whether the fairing still could have been damaged perhaps where it bolts on even though there is nothing wrong on the surface of it? Perhaps internal cracks?

What should I be looking for?

I am truly thankful though that the bike pretty much escaped unscathed. With all my high-speed riding in the twisties and endless practising of low-speed manoeuvres that the bike should fall down at 0km/h whilst I'm on it is very embarrassing!

Whilst I'm on this topic I thought I might as well change my bar-ends to match the bike. Would these fit my 2004 GS500F?

lol lucky man. when I got cut off and did an endo on my goped, I broke my starter, the pawls, hell what else. meh about 90 bux worth of hardware. anyhoo back on topic my friend,  check for cracks around mounting holes, check hell just check it over closely. see if anything feels loose. but odds are just a simple fall over. w/o damage id say.

By the sound of it nothing was visibly damaged, but it doesn't hurt to go around your bike at 6 mth intervals & check everything for tightness.

I haven't found any, went through it all, shook the fairing on both sides pretty firmly and the RHS and LHS both feel sturdy. No cracks or even minor spider-web cracks found anywhere (yet anyway).

I am still interested to find out how you would fix fairing cracks anyway!
