Title: New Rider - 2009 GS500F
Post by: Big Red Head on October 10, 2013, 06:35:19 PM
Greetings everyone, I have been lurking for a few months, and now that the season up here is winding down (not done yet though), I thought I would introduce myself. This site was a huge help for me in choosing the GS500 as my first bike. I had only rode a 125 cc dirt bike prior, so I really had no experience.

I pulled the trigger on a clean, 2009 GS500F, black/silver back in July. Came with jacket, boots, tank bag, cover, chain degreaser & lube..basically everything needed to begin riding. I then got my M1 licence and started riding. Shortly after that I took the MSF course (highly recommended). It was a lot of fun.

I've been riding since July, and I've put on nearly 3000 kms riding back and forth to work and afterwork rides. I can honestly say that this bike is amazing, perfect for beginners and longer rides/touring. I rode a buddies R6, and could not wait to get off of it. It was so weird and uncomfortable.

Future plans are to upgrade the front springs over the winter and ride her another season then who knows....I have been dreaming about a longer trip somewhere. I know a guy who rode his GS500 from Ontario to Alaska, so these bikes are reliable, strong runners.

keep the rubber down :flipoff:

Thanks guys!
I haven't changed the oil on it yet, but will be doing that soon. From what I have read, I need to be very careful with the oil cover bolts/studs because it sounds like it is common for people to over tighten and break the bolts/studs. Alos, it sounds like the header needs to come off or at least be loosened? Can anyone verify that? No worries, I'll find out one way or another  :thumb:

I hope to pull the trigger on upgraded fork springs over the winter too. Sonics or Progressives seem to be the brands of choice.

No need to touch the headers for an oil change. Just be aware that some oil is likely to drip onto them. You can try covering them but you are better off degreasing after the new filter is fitted.

Welcome to the forum and nice bike. Yes, be careful with the bolts. Put them back on with little pressure. Remember if they are loose you can tighten them. It they are broke, you're screwed. Enjoy your bike. I have an'08 with low miles, for now. It's a fun bike and easy to toss around and have fun. Put your knees in the breeze.
