i have a problem... i got my bike about 2.5 months ago.
the first time i got to ride it it lost power and cutoff i had to limp it home.
i got home and wiggled hoses, checked things, and made sure the gas was not low or anything.
after that it was fine for a couple weeks. i had another day of issue and then another week of no problems.
rode to work and had a bitt of a problem again that next weekend. on the way back home it got really bad.
i got stranded on the side of the road like 4 times o the way back home. finally i found something. on the fuel line that
goes from the res/prime/on petcock to the carbs i have a filter. the part from the petcoc to filter was kinked. so i
had inadvertently unkinked it other times by just checking the filter. this time i found the kink, and replaced that section of hose.
fast forward like 3 weeks, have had no problem then all of a sudden on my way home i had many instances.
it feels like it is losing gas. but the filter that previously had air bubbles in it was full, no bubbles.
if i am going along it will start surging/bogging, then it willstart to lose power, as i coast to a stop if i hit the clutch it will die. it will not immediatly start, but if i let it sit, it will start and run fine for a bit. half a mile or less later, dead again.
it is very inconsistent i rode halfway home bofore i had any issues, and then the second half was just stopping every 1/4 to 1/2 mile.
i bought the bike from a mechanic that had gone through it and cleaned/synced the carbs, cleaned out the gas tank, and other stuff. i dont know what else to look at. did not see any issues wilth vacuum hoses.
this morning i took off my tank, cleaned out the vent, checked vac hoses, cleaned out petcocks and other lines that did not get replaced. drained all gas and cleaned the screen on the tank petcock, which was kinda gunked up.
acted better for a fewmiles and then started again...
Does the reserve tank when it is approximately 4 liters left? my went perfectly full tank then stop frequently before reserve. Checked hoses order and they were connected incorrectly. Available right described in the forum. Now it's a whole other speed on my gs500 = TURBOFEELING!!! ;)
will check the order of the hoses when i get back to it. my son went and picked it up for me and it drove back home fine from where i got stranded today... i hate intermittent issues. they are so hard to diagnose...
I have gone for another diagnostic ride. Just around the roads near my house. In 15 miles I have had 3 instances of this problem. What happened differently was after it shut off on me (at home this time) I switched to reserve and it acted perfectly fine for a bit. That has never really made a difference before.
Not sure if the hoses are right, but they are the way it was when i got it.
Hoses are longer port towards front of bike is going to the "L" shaped port on petcock. Shorter one is going to the back facing straight port. when i took hoses and tank off earlier there was some rusty stuff that came out of the hose facing the rear.
I guess i will unhook the hoses to that petcock again and clean it out with carb cleaner. As well as the other feed hose.
I really hope I don't end up having to rebuild carbs to get this bike going right again...
Maybe the P.O. butchered the carbs with wrong needle adjustments and terrible jet settings. First thing I would do though is clean out the pet cocks and all fuel passageways. These carbs are as simple as they come, just make sure the passageways are free of the "rust" you mentioned earlier.
I thought my carbs were clean as a whistle after getting a couple pieces of "rust" out. Then I kept blowing and a bunch more came out!
