Title: Is some valve tick normal?0.08
Post by: SD_GS500E on October 28, 2013, 08:52:54 PM
I just adjusted my valves and shortly after started getting what sounds like a valve tick once the engine warms up.  I pulled the cover and rechecked the valves again, both exhaust are between 0.08-0.09mm, right intake is 0.06-0.07mm, and left intake was just over 0.08, but I reshimmed it down to 0.06-0.07.

anywho...I wasn't sure if some valve tick is normal and I just didn't notice before because the valves were so tight or if I need to start chasing a different problem.

After setting my exhausts from 03 to 08 MM (265 shims replaced with 260 shims), I could hear more valve ticking. I would say that as long as you KNOW the gaps are right then you are hearing normal valve ticking. This assumes the only change was the greater clearances in your valves.

Noisy valves are happy valves.*

Valve clearance always get tighter over time (unless you have altered something else, e.g. polished the valve faces) and tighter valves are quieter. So you are good!

*Unless for some reason the bucket has spit out the shim ... then there will be no question that the terrible sound you are hearing is a bad thing. My condolences for your valve bucket and camshaft.

The GS500 's engine sounds like a sewing machine when it is running properly.  As stated, if you know the bike is in spec, I wouldn't worry about it.
