Title: Rejetting soon, but very likely to get exhaust system after. Use 145 main jet?
Post by: dinkydonuts on November 03, 2013, 10:39:15 AM
2004 GS500F

I already have plans to put on the K&N lunch box this week, so I will be upgrading the mid-main to a 65, stock pilot is 20 and will remain 20.

Without putting on an exhaust system, the pilot I will use will be 142.5. The wiki says to use a 145 with a performance exhaust.

I figure, why not just put on the 145 now? Will that 2.5 difference have a detrimental impact if I ride with it for a few weeks?

The reason I don't want to rejet later is I'm finnicky about carb gaskets and prefer to use new ones every time I disassemble the bowls. At $10/pop for a new pair of bowl gaskets, I'd rather spend that money on a full tank of gas for riding.  ;)

your wasting your money if your changing the rubber bowl gasket every time you open the bowl.

For anyone who finds this later on, I decided to go ahead and put in the 145 main jet anyway. The worst case is the bike will run rich, which to me beats it running lean and over heating. A little carbon fouling isn't a big deal... just give it the ole' Italian tune-up and blow all that crud out of the exhaust pipe on the highway.  :thumb:
