Title: Normal Idle/Battery
Post by: JAS6377 on November 06, 2013, 07:36:06 PM
I know normal idle speed is about 1200. That's not my question. My question is this: is it normal for the idle to fluctuate by 100-200 RPM? I noticed tonight when I did some last minute winterizing that she seems to have a slight upward bounce in the idle every 5 seconds or so. It runs fine, and I just adjusted the valves and synced the carbs. The are no awkward sounds, or anything else obviously out of place.

The battery is a cheap lead-acid (from the PO), and is at least 2 years old. I just tested it and it dropped from 11.74V to 9.22V when cranking. It also quickly lost voltage (12.5 ish down to 11.74) after shutting it off. Granted, it has been relatively sedentary for the past 2 weeks, so the battery probably isn't at full charge.

Opinions?

Idle RPM fluctuates a bit when first started, especially when cold. It will fluctuate less and also idle a bit higher when fully warmed up, but even then, there will be about 50 - 100 rpm fluctuations.

Fair enough. I'm extremely meticulous about maintenance, so I just like to make sure everything is in good shape. Especially if it's right under my crotch lol. The battery still concerns me a bit, but I'll worry about that next season.

Btw F2004, did you ever get your clutch perch situation figured out?

No, not yet! I'm done with uni for this semester in 2 weeks, that's when I will get around to sorting it out. Still had no clear answer as to whether the '99 - '02 SV650 perch will do, but I'm going to go to the wreckers and get one there.

If your going to be looking to a new battery, I highly recommend a bike master true gel battery. It amazing how well a gel battery performs

I noticed this big time on my bike. If that battery is old or starting to get weak, it affects idle A LOT. Throw a new battery on there, you'll see a major difference
