Title: Few Questions - Exhaust & Subframe
Post by: dkidd2004 on November 09, 2013, 06:22:15 AM
Hi Everyone,

I currently own a GS500F (2005)

I've been playing around this weekend with what started as a Koso gauge integration below the wind shield for better viewing angles (more on that another time).

One thing led to another and I've become determined to get the street fighter style I've wanted for a while. After tearing the bike down a bit I've come across a few issues i need some help with.

1. Exhaust

Ultimately, if I could, I would love something like Jim Knopf's first image in the following thread

http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=65870.0 (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=65870.0)

Realistically i'd just like the low profile look of having it end just behind the foot pegs instead of a full can down one side. After searching everything i could on Exhausts both on this forum and others i still have a few questions. From what I gather my GS has the catalytic converter within the can itself? So to cut the can off and weld anything else on i'd require it to be the same (cat in can) or weld one in the line if it wasn't?

How would something so short affect sound? I'm not overly into the "look at me" loud exhaust nor the attention they draw. Is it as simple as finding a small muffler/cat modifying the pipes so it will be able to weld in properly and cutting the can off to add the tips?

Alternatively, as I'm already telling myself it has to be far more complicated than that (without even starting on re-jetting), would a smaller can be a much simpler option left in the same stock configuration (up the side)? would this be easier to just cut and weld on and then move onto re-jetting?

I have a welder who is happy to do everything I need for cash jobs, provided I have it worked out and ready to go (Also applies for my second round of questions)

2. Subframe

After picking up an RS125 subframe and tail, planning and finally scrapping the tail conversion idea, i revisited it today. Turns out some simple modifications to the existing subframe will allow the new tail and modified seat to fit.

Question is (and i will ask a certified engineer before starting it as I'll need a certificate anyway) does the following before and after photoshop look as though it will remain safe? I've maintained 2 "braces" between each side (the seat lock after being shortened height wise and a new brace across the back of the now shortened frame)

Before

After
(http://imageshack.us/a/img266/7140/2ds5.jpg)

(it was a rough photoshop/MS Paint job, keep in mind I understand the seat lock looks slightly off angle)

Would removing the passenger foot peg/exhaust pieces (dropping down from the subframe) cause any structural damage?

Any help would be appreciated, really only in the planning stage at the moment, attempting to figure out just what needs to be done, calculating cost and time (so i can triple it to come close to being realistic haha!). Any help or suggestions would be amazing!

Cheers
Dan

from the looks of that set up its just headers into a muffler\cat combination then pipes out...... as long as the muffler can accept the pipe diameter of the headers it should be fine.... then design the pipes out and a mout and stick them on the back of the muffler......

I could be completely wrong here but I'm just going off the picture lol

I would expect that to be quite louder then stock though
