Title: Install of ZG Touring Screen.. work in progress
Post by: Janx101 on November 17, 2013, 03:27:02 PM
Gday folks, after receiving the screen in good time from CrownSeven i got onto the install .. it being a sunday i couldnt zip over to the bikeshop for a few bits, so i had a think and a browse around the auto parts shop... and a aquarium place!? .. you'll see why ..

a few of the following items i am not 100% sure for long term effectiveness, but cant hurt to try eh! .. and apologies for the mess in the background .. its been storming quite hard lately .. the garden shed has developed a certain slump and overall casual attitude to shed-ness .. waiting on the landlord to maybe do a new one!

to start .. and just for future reference.. 2 pics showing the relative sizes/shape of the stock vs ZG Touring screen .. as you can see its quite a bit longer but maintains the same profile and pretty much the same curvature

actually forgot to take a 'before' pic  :icon_rolleyes: .. but heres one with the stock screen removed

(http://i940.photobucket.com/albums/ad244/Janx101/bikeblingers/PH000097_zpsca6b9da2.jpg) (http://s940.photobucket.com/user/Janx101/media/bikeblingers/PH000097_zpsca6b9da2.jpg.html)

i was missing the middle wellnut/lug locator thingies for halfway up the screen .. the PO had put a building/hardware type wellnut in one of them but it was kinda arse .. so at the autoparts shop i grabbed some of the following .. black canoe clips and clear cups .. the cups are normally used for in car door trim mounting holes .. and according to the shop bloke they are used with both canoe clips and 'christmas tree' type clips ..

(http://i940.photobucket.com/albums/ad244/Janx101/bikeblingers/PH000098_zpsf0c7225a.jpg) (http://s940.photobucket.com/user/Janx101/media/bikeblingers/PH000098_zpsf0c7225a.jpg.html)(http://i940.photobucket.com/albums/ad244/Janx101/bikeblingers/PH000099_zps8bdfd59c.jpg) (http://s940.photobucket.com/user/Janx101/media/bikeblingers/PH000099_zps8bdfd59c.jpg.html)

then the aquarium shop item .. soft silicon airline tubing used for fishtanks .. the stock screen vibrated/buzzed a bit and had minor wear marks around the back surface from rubbing on the black inner fairing thingie .. i wanted something to protect the new screen but mainly to try stop some of the buzzing .. so roughly 60cm of the tubing was split along its length with a razor and pushed/fitted around the edge of the black bit .. its not a perfect snug fit .. and i have yet to ride with it in there so i dont know how effective it will be .. plus with more fitting clips now overall it may have been unnecessary .. anyway ..

(http://i940.photobucket.com/albums/ad244/Janx101/bikeblingers/PH000102_zpsc0d3866a.jpg) (http://s940.photobucket.com/user/Janx101/media/bikeblingers/PH000102_zpsc0d3866a.jpg.html)

the canoe clips were 'about same size' as the fitting hole in the screen .. i wanted to try make sure that they were snug rather than loose.. hence the clear cups.. placed in the screen holes and eventually UNDER the fairing surface for extra 'neatness' and a few mm more depth .. possibly?

(http://i940.photobucket.com/albums/ad244/Janx101/bikeblingers/PH000103_zps39128956.jpg) (http://s940.photobucket.com/user/Janx101/media/bikeblingers/PH000103_zps39128956.jpg.html)

.. then after some fiddling .. swearing ... flexing of plastic bits ... swearing.... breaking of push pins .. REALLY SWEARING .. snapping of the bloody plastic lower front screwhead (seriously.. a plastic screw? .. stupid!! .. but maybe i am more stupid for over tightening it?)  :icon_rolleyes: .. ran out of swearing at this point and a cold silence reigned the backyard! .. the installed screen .. for the moment

(http://i940.photobucket.com/albums/ad244/Janx101/bikeblingers/PH000105_zps53fbc666.jpg) (http://s940.photobucket.com/user/Janx101/media/bikeblingers/PH000105_zps53fbc666.jpg.html)

... the thing is gonna have to come off again when i sort out whether i want to put a black sticker thingy and suzuki logo like on the stock screen on the inside... or some logo/graphic sticker and a different colour background? .. got a few rough ideas for a little 'bling' panel in that area but we'll see... also i need to ride with the screen on and see how the air pressure goes vis a vis silicon tubing and buzzing as well as see if airflow pressure actually 'fits' the screen more firmly against the tubing (its in contact but the contact patch varies when looked at in real closeup ... plus extract that blasted plastic screw thread and replace it with something..

so thats what i did on my drizzling sunday afternoon .. its not all 'legit' .. but hopefully is of some information use to you all ..

will update with thoughts and further issues as they happen  :thumb:

.. edit ..

nearly forgot ... standing a few paces away from the bike now and looking at the 'tall' screen ... i cant decide if it looks like this..

Nice. That one i had made a lot of difference when you were tucked down. You didn't want to paint the back side of yours first?

yeeees .. i did want to paint it first .. but the weather was wet and humid air... which normally sux balls for paint ... and i REALLY wanted to put the thing on for initial testing/riding ... it was fiddly setting everything in place ..

however as i am still unsure of how effective those canoe clips are going to be .. as well as the air tubing... i figured i'll remove it again once i have everything settled/finalised .. then decal/paint it before final install ..  :thumb:

You can order a new set of well nuts and decorative screws off ebay for very little

thanks weeds .. yeah i probably will.... i even looked them up on sunday arvo... they didnt have 'instant international star trek transporter right NOW!' service though..  :icon_lol:

i was curious to see if my bodge solutions actually work though... mainly the canoe clip bits ... it could be a handy 'on the road' fix for someone one day!  :icon_question:
