Title: Turbo Charging
Post by: ron freeman on November 20, 2013, 05:17:03 PM
Is it possible to turbo charge a GS500? My bike has 5500 on it and I love it but I really want more power. Is there a better way to get more power? I am very mechanically inclined and can fix just about anything. Also I need a repair manual that is very detailed. Where can one be purchased? Thanks brothers. :)

the better way, is to sell (or keep) the gs, and buy a sv650, ninja650, ex500 (yes, the old one) or more powerful machine.

Sorry, I  didn't  answer your question.  yes it's possible, but not quick or easy. there is limited soever for the carbs as is, and adding e new intake would be an undertaking.

i'd say +1 to ohgood theory .. but if its power and turbo you really want ... go all out to start with! .. otherwise you will be forever spending more dollars to upgrade for 'that bit more' ...

maybe like this  :icon_twisted:

It is possible to turbocharge ANY internal combustion engine, you basically are running the turbocharger off the exhaust gases, letting it build pressure and having it blow more air into the combustion chamber.

Whether you need one for the GS is up to you to decide.

I agree with ohgood as well. But anything is possible.

There is more to turbo charging a motor than buying one and bolting it on - the intake system changes completely, along with the exhaust (obviously). The few motorcycles I've seen that have added a turbo were built my master fabricators ...... not saying you can't do it, but try to find a build thread of another bike and read through it.

Ron, I ride a 2006 GSXR 1000 and man let me tell you.......that bish will fly.

I have a Power Commanders 5 on it with the Autotune and a TRE (Timing Retard Eliminator), full Brocks Alienhead exhaust and the power on it is AMAZING.......and deadly if you are not careful.

It can be done, but is it really worth it to do such a custom modification to a GS500?

It would be kind of like turbocharging a CBR125 to 'make more power' ~ you will get some but whether it would be worth the investment of time and money is dubious.

A fun project if you like tinkering and are actually knowledgeable enough to make it work, I guess  :dunno_black:

Couldl you turbo it? Absolutely! is it worth it? That depends on how attatched to the bike you are, i discussed this with a friend of my dads whos a bike mechanic, we decided that the best turbo would be a small CAT (Heavy machinery) turbo off a skidsteer or somethign similar, it would cost quite a bit and the gains from a 500 are much more limited than say a liter bike.

I've actually considered the GSXR1000. But let me ask you this. If you could go back would have went ahead and bought 1300Busa?
As for the cost of turbo charging the GS. Let me tell you guy this. From my house to my travel trailer, I've modified everything I've ever bought. I bought (am paying) for my wife a 2012 VW Jetta. We didn't have it a week and bought a stainless steel pedal cluster for it just so it was different than all the rest. I like to be unique and try things not tried before. Doing those type things/projects is what keeps me going.

I hear ya Ron - I'm the same way. When we got a riding mower my wife told me "You're not "souping it up" or anything. It cuts grass just fine."

:icon_eek: :icon_twisted: .. and therein lies your challenge Rich ... modify the lawn tractor in such a way that she doesnt actually realise that anything HAS been done... till she stomps on the pedal and cartwheels off the back of it!!  :D

.. Ron .. while i initially mentioned and linked the big bike turbo in a post above..

i find myself drawn to your thinking... and i seem to have a spare motor minus carbs and harness just sitting in my shed too!!... got it off Unsane ! :thumb:

i grabbed it to start with thinking of it as a 'learning tool' .. something to take apart and see how stuff works .. while still having a functioning one in the bike!.... and then.....

the rest of the thinking started... weeeelllllll.. if i learn how to take it apart .. and see how all the bits go... at some point it will also go back together ... i dont have any carbs .. shame... but what would i possibly need to FI and turbo it? .. or bore/stroke it ... or blueprint it ... or... or ... or...

then i would potentially have a motor and gearbox ... that with a hour or so of wrench time i could swap out for something like a trackday .. or the drags!! .. knowing that it wont ever be a gixxer or a busa!! .. but taking the theory of gs500 power to the upper limits!? ..  :D .. for the sake of it

and go back to the standard tame motor for just riding around rest of time...

so many ifs!! ....

so get to work eh!! .. i havent the $$ for the investigation and parts right now... but it would be sweet to see and share ideas with a current project worker!  :thumb:

So it has. Looked pretty cool. But like I told Janx, I'll probley just keep it stock and buy a bigger bike at some point. My winter time project is going to building a kick down shifter for it so if you guys any pointers let me knkw them. Thanks.
