Hey everyone,
I've managed to strip the thread of my GS' 'mirror fittings' (i.e. the metal fittings on the handlebars where the mirrors screw / bolt into), but can't find the replacement part anywhere! I've tried various part websites but can't seem to find a part number.
If anyone knows the part number / has a link to a website where I might be able to order them to the UK I would be most grateful!
Cheers,
Meuryn.
The easiest option is to go to the local hardware store, and get rubber stoppers that are the right size for your bars, and a washer and nut sized for the bolt. Put the bolt in the mirror, slide the stopper on, washer, then thread the nut so it's just barely snug. Spray the stopper with hairspray...or something of the sort, pop in in the bar and tighten the bolt. THe stopper expands inside the bar and voila...bar end mirror.

If it ends up costing more than $25, get a set of universal/GSXR fit mirrors on eBay.
I have ones that have integrated turn signal lights and they come with their own hardware and an adjustable mounting bracket. The only downside is they are not long enough, so you end up seeing your elbows most of the time, but it isn't an issue if you ride to the left or right of center on the road.
Helicoil.
Thanks for the replies!
I was running with bar ends, but they're actually the reason I'm moving back to normal mirrors - they look good but I couldn't configure them with a small enough blind spot and I found that cars were creeping up on me without my noticing, which never happened with the larger standard mirrors.
Good news is, I've managed to find and order the right hand mirror fitting (it's listed as a 'mirror clamp', with all the parts for the front master cylinder).
BUT, it looks like the LH mirror fixing is a non-removable part of the clutch lever assembly (according to the schematics, I'm not actually able to look at my bike in person at the moment). I've found an assembly on eBay for a good price, but it's for a '98 GS. Would it fit my 2002 GS do we think?
Also, what on earth is a helicoil? ;)
Cheers again,
Meuryn
yeah the right mirror mount is part of the holder for the front master cylinder, while the right mirror mount is integrated in the clutch mount assembly.
Helicoils are for fixing stripped threads in a threaded hole ;)
I went on ebay and got a 30$ pair of mirrors. They fit perfectly in.
Right side is easy Universal 7/8th mirror mounts off ebay ... left is much harder, you need the clutch post.
IMHO - Helicoil kit will be far more $$$ than the clutch perch ... and may break off the post ...
Cool.
Buddha.
Meuryn: The clutch perch for GS500's are all the same.
While the right brake master cylinder did change, they all work and fit the same.
For these 2 parts, if in doubt, just buy the best looking, newest you can find for the best price.
Ah, Googled clutch perch and found exactly the one I need! :D
Thanks for everyone's help!
