Title: Front brake calliper I.D. please
Post by: Joolstacho on December 03, 2013, 04:59:09 PM
I need to get new front pads, but I need to make sure I get the correct type. The bike is an '89 model. I know the calliper was changed in '04 to AJP, and my calliper has AJP cast on it. Can anyone tell from this pic? (I can do close-ups if necessary)

You have the newer caliper. On the older ones the pistons were different sizes.

Thanks mate, that was quick!
The exploded view on the Wiki shows an '89-'96 calliper and a '96 to current calliper, but in the 'year changes' section it says "1996 minor changes" Then I see another change in 2004 to AJP type.
Guess I might have to pull them out to check.

I have an AJP caliper from a 09 on my 02 GS.  Front pads are same for all years 96-09.  Calipers were a different design on 89-95 models with different pads.  All rears same from 89-09.

Are the later model 96-09 calipers worth swapping onto an 89 model?  are you guys changing the master cylinder too?
