Title: Engine Life Question!

I am offer 2001 GS500 with 50000 miles on motor, the motor sounds good.
I want to ask how much more mileage one can expect with proper maintenance?

I put 80k miles on my 97 GS that I bought new and replaced in 03 with my current 02 GS that I bought with about 4k miles and now have over 100k miles on it.  I maintained both with regular oil changes and valve checks and any minor repairs needed.  How many more miles you'll get from one with 50k miles on it depends on how well it was treated by the previous owner/owners as well as how you maintain and use it.

Somewhere past 50-60k miles or so you can expect oil consumption to increase considerably if used for high speed commuting or interstate travel.  No big problem if you keep the oil full, I'll let you know how long my 02 lasted when I get there.   I thrashed the 97 hard in the mountains and did 400-500 mile interstate days at 75-80 mph indicated getting there but the 02 has suffered far less abuse mostly due to the ageing of it's rider.

I'll add -

You also feel a drop in power with mileage. 50k is about the limit where you can confidently feel you can outrun a car next to you @ a light.
Oil consumption goes up, valve adjustments become required, and I'd say stay away from doing the K&N type filter if you want longevity and useability past 50k.

ERGO - If it has 50k miles and has has 25k of K&N ... you may already be looking at a top end rebuild.

I'm pushing 80,000 miles on my '07, which I've had from new. With regular maintenance, there's no reason you can't continue to pile up the miles. Best wishes for many happy miles to come!

I had always wondered that myself. My 08 GS has 5400 miles on it and I do often wonder how long it'll be before valve adjustments and shimming issues start. I see on the site some of those issues and it worries me. I don't know anything about motorcycle repairs so I'd have to pay someone and where I live it's nearly impossible to find a straight mechanic that's going to say they made repairs they actually didn't. Great question.
