Sucks for new people, but I'm starting to get annoyed.
I can't say I'm upset by your decision, good sir. I haven't been as active recently due to things and whatnot, but when I do get on, I like to read engaging and informative posts. That's why I joined this forum. I support this.

THANK YOU. I saw GPN go down due to spammers. ive seen FEW instances of this over a decades time. and MAYBE 2 crashes. that in itself is remarkeable my friend. doing this will keep it that way. I found this site via google search. by searching Suzuki gs500 owners forums and chose this being the first one that popped up. ( @ top of list)
I'm relatively new to this forum but I totally support that call. I am so sick of hackers and spammers too. Protect what you've created. This forum has helped me to upgrade and maintain my GS so I support whatever it takes to keep it running.

AMEN to that. and to beat all this site is add free. really the only add I see is a reminder to order a repair manual via provided link so site gets a gimme. that in itself I support as well. site over a decade if not longer has been well maintained. and hope it continues to be so.

Yea I think we started the forum in 2000. Been a while. We went from using a really cruddy forum software, to phpbb then SMF. We switched to SMF because of all the hacking to phpbb 7 or 8 years ago. At that time nobody bothered with lowly SMF.
I hate to close registration, or go back to manually approving. Both are poor guarantees and I know some of the accounts disapproved were probably legit people from AUS or europe.
Well, not sure what all you've tried but do you think having some form of timed lockout on registration would work?
EX: after they do the security questions and whatnot give them a 5 minute timer before they hit the button to send the confirmation email. To users that wouldn't be a big deal, but I assume a spammer needs to hit a TON of websites to do what they want -- maybe they'll think **** it and move on?

lol I remember those days
On the back of the GS500 you will see the tail _ _ _ _?:
John, what's the answer?!
I would think light... but apparently not?

John,
As one of the monitors on another bike site I think it is just necessary. Anyone that really cares about the site and the information that it offers does not mine jumping through a couple of hoops.
You really do keep a nice clean informative site.
