Title: bought a 1990 GS500e Today, can u help?
Post by: RagnaR on January 27, 2004, 04:10:32 AM
Howdi, I'm from Sydney, Australia. Bought a GS500e today and noticed when riding home that the excelorator seems to stick a bit when changing up & down gears. This causes the engine to over rev, kinda sounds like I am a beginner over reving when changing gears.

When I de-throttle and pull in the clutch to change gear, the rev counter goes up by 1 notch (1/10th of 1000 rev. That's if there is 10 parts to 1000 I forget :) ) and gradually the rev counter will then drop over a 1 1/2 seconds.

With my last bike i owned 2 years ago, A honda CBX 550. The revs dropped straight away when I turned the throttle off.

How can I fix this? Is this just an excelorator cable adjustment or is it indicating something more serious?

I don't know anything about mechanics :)

I didn't explain properly. The throttle goes all the way off it's just that the engine itself revs up.

I don't know what is happening inside the cable, maybe it isn't going back. Is there someway to check and tell if the cable is going back?

The fella I bought it off said he just put in a new cable. Also there is a dead spot with the throttle, say the 1st 1/2 inch does nothing.

Well he didn't install the cable correctly- it has too much slack in it. Also does the bike do this at idle...you rev it upa little bit and let off and the rpms stay up for a little bit then come back down to idle? If so it's a lean condition in the carbs. Also if teh bike sat for a long time the throttle plates could be a bit sticky (oes the throttle turn freely??)

With a whole 1/2" of slack you probably want to adjust the cable at the carburetor end.  This involves removing the seat (easy), the side panels (easy - after the first time), and the fuel tank (not too bad if it's mostly empty, but mark all three hoses as you disconnect them).  The actual cable adjustment is probably the trickiest part.  You'll see what I mean when you get there.

A small amount of cable slack can also be adjusted near the throttle grip end of the cable.  This is MUCH easier, but if/when you run out of adjustment here you need to go the route described above.

OK I didn't relate the 2 posts till now... You have a broken bike and are calling names, right on the day you sign on to the board... Common sense please...
Cool.

Take it easy on the poor guy, Srinath.

He's either stressed about his bike, or maybe he uses the Australian version of AOL...

You get it figured out yet, Ragnar?

Hmm... I just remembered where I've heard that name before. Ragnar was the name of the viking you played in the viking-era FPS, RUNE.

This bit of useless videogame trivia was brought to you by caffeine. :thumb:

Srinath,

I didn't notice any name-calling, just a lot of bad english... but then you expect that from Sydney-siders (please excuse Australian interstate rivalries)...

Ragnar,

Once you've sorted out your bike drop me a line and we can see about organising a ride-out. There's some great twisties down the Clyde, near Bateman's Bay...

We'll have to see if there are any other GS-riders around Sydney/Canberra-way (please respond off-list).

Noticed after furthur riding today that if I excellerate over 7k before changing gears then the over reving doesn't happen. As soon as i pull the clutch in the rev drops etc, seems normal.

It only seems to over rev if i change gears(up or down) below say 5k

Also, after a couple of minutes riding the idle just stays below 1k, so I adjusted idle screw to about 1.2k and did the trick. But when I went for a 20 min ride down the highway and came to set of lights as soon as i pulled clutch in the revs stayed at 3k for about 4 seconds. I adjusted idle back to how it was...

So does this all sound like, sticky clutch, sticky excellorator plate or need to adjust excellorator cable like Kerry said?

As for this other thing srinath seems to be obsessed with, he seems to be stalking me and telling me to take it easy as i'm a new member here, hmmm. The way i see it, some dude in another post got agro and anti social and went on the attack because he didn't like my comments. Which wern't posted to him by the way, he apperently seems to think a worl revolves around him and took it personally.

As for that dude and raven, my guess is that they are Republican(US) and Liberal PArty(Australia - small l liberal, the Liberal PArty in Aust are right wing) voters...

Raven, I wouldn't be seen riding with a right wing devient, hehehe I RIDE TO BE FREE...

Sinrath seems to be a knight in shining armour who's task in life is to prowl this board to protect the virtue of his little mate...

So Srinrath it not my fault, ur little mate attacked me. I know that right wing people feel that the lower classes should just lay still and accept their beatings with gratitude and MUST never defend themselves. But the world is a chaning' hehehe

I may have misunderstood.  When you said that the first 1/2" of throttle does nothing, I jumped to the conclusion that the throttle cable wasn't even going taut until then.  If that's not the case, please ignore my previous post.

It's fairly common to have to adjust the idle after the bike is warmed up.  But I wonder if your choke is turning off all the way?

Isn't there an oxymoron in there somewhere?   ;)

I guess that means you don't have many friends. Speaks volumes of your upbringing that when someone flames you for being a moron you instantly assume that they vote Liberal (Democrat/Labor in the last election, thanks). Tell me, did you vote, or were you too busy failing english?

Actually, I think you're getting beaten for being a fool rather than anything to do with your socio-economic situation.

If you'd bothered to read some of the posts here instead of screaming uneducated, uninformed political views you might have noticed, Sinrath seems to be a decent bloke who's helping out a few of the less fortunate of us here with the scary amounts he knows. Don't ask for help with your mouth while slagging everyone else off with the other end.

Why don't you wander back to redneck Queensland and ask Pauline Hanson if she wants to go riding - you might feel more at home.

I'd like to stay quiet but I find it hard to keep my opinions to myself sometimes .. especially when I should.

Political views on this site seem to be acceptable if they aren't insulting to others (I'm just going by observation).

I think the actual name calling started with someone else but you seem to have way of pissing people off.

werase643's last post was a good example of a friendly jab ... we all know it is because he's been around for a year and made hundreds of posts .. many times helping others.  We don't know what your comments are all about because we don't know you yet.  I suggest you tone it down a little unless you want to continually get flamed.

There's all kinds of different people on this site ... kids, old guys, poor, rich and I'm sure widely varying political opinions ... whatever ... what we all have in common is that we like talking about the GS.

Werase's smart assiness towards me comes not from knowing me on the board, its from off the board. We meet once a month or try more often, for lunch or somehting... we give as good as we get usually... those YSR parts he keeps running up and down the pike for positively make me laugh. You should have seen the things swingarm pivot bolt, or its neck bearings... Belongs in a Cartoon...

Kerry & Bluekynt you are geniuses :) I took the bike to mechanic and he said choke is STUCK on a bit and there is an air leak somewhere. Oh well shall be fixed soon, thanx for the help...

Raven - Look pal, I know you are a knuckle dragger so I will make this point as sucsinctly and straight to the point as I can and bad speeling aside. I am a Alpha male and have an enormous pee pee! You it is abundantly clear and obvious from your posts that you are at best a beta male, at worst a cuckold.

If i EVER see your ugly fascist head on the south coast roads I shall immediately get off my bike, pull out my oversized tool, go over to you and promptly proceed to beat you to death with my enourmous pee pee.

Bwahahaha!

500Rider - Yeh ok, lets all just get along. Even though the fascist thugs on here who go around starting the insults but don't like it being dished backed. For the sake of a happy GS community I will no longer reply back to thier vile and negative attacks.

p.s. I reserve the right not to extend this curtisy to that meat head Raven :) I shall be keeping an eye out for a GS rider with a wickedly ugly and grotesk head on the south coast roads... HAhahahaha
